HAVING A CLOSE FRIEND of a different race was no anomaly in a country as ethnically diverse as Belize. Many locals acknowledged themselves as ‘Creole’ rather than try to identify every strain of their ancestry. Of course, ignorance existed in Belize—same as in any country. However, those who saw it fit to judge a person based on their skin color or their race lived and breathed in their own little world as most of the younger generations intermingled happily. Upon their first few interactions as friends, Nelly had been openly fascinated by Erik’s culture. She had never been close to an Asian guy and found every new tidbit about Erik’s background a joy to discover.
