THE STREETS OF BELIZE CITY were filled with workers stepping out of their downtown offices to seek sustenance at the many vendors and restaurants open nearby. The scent of frying fish and stewed beans filled the air. Men on bicycles pedaled past, hawking their wares of ‘hot tamales and ducunu’ for all to hear. The sunshine rained down on every head with eager indifference. No one was safe from the heat that descended on the tropical country like a fiery cloud.
