The Abuse.

Chapter 17. Noria’s Pov. A sting bloomed hot in my chest, and I rolled my tongue within my mouth before turning around to leave. Over the past years, when Nathan was done abusing me, he would often buy me gifts to please my heart and body. But I was done taking that treatment. I was done being treated like an object. Done being maltreated and pleased with material stuff. All these years, I endured everything because I felt that was all love was about. I endured it because even the love from my mother was abusive, but now I am learning to walk away. Nathan’s hand shot forward, and he instantly grabbed my arm, preventing me from taking another step. “Let go of me!” I cursed, but his grip on my arm tightened, and he pulled me closer to himself. “What are you doing walking away from me, Noria? Did you not hear that I got you a gift?” “I do not want your gift,” I groaned angrily, pushing him hard by the chest just so he could get off me. Nathan staggered backward, but he soon found his stance. The air between us stiffened, but he suddenly clapped his palm in the air. Three men walked forward, one holding a flower, the other holding a cake, while the third held a statement necklace. My heart cracked at the sight of it, and a tear rolled down my left eye. “Tell me what else you want and I will give it to you,” he said, taking a step forward. “The only thing I want is for you to leave me alone!” I gritted, stamping my foot hard against the floor while trying not to draw attention, but the customers were already turning and whispering in our direction. Nathan’s eyes darkened, then he took another step closer to me. “Before now, whenever we argue, all it takes for you to start giggling is a gift. Why are you being such a killjoy?” “Because I don’t want you!” I gritted lowly, trying not to alert the manager. Nathan’s jaw tightened. He looked away briefly, then back at me. “I know you are hurting right now, but come back to me. I will forgive you. I will fix all this and forgive you.” Forgive me? This dude has definitely gone nuts. “The only thing that needs to be fixed…” I said in a very tight tone. “Is you!” Nathan’s jaw tightened, and the vein at the side of his temple twitched. “If I take one step away from here, then do not come back f*****g crawling!” My tongue twitched within the confines of my mouth, but I let out a throaty chuckle, blinking back my already wet lashes. “Yes, before now I used to be that stupid, but now? Now you have absolutely nothing to worry about because I will never come crawling.” “You lie to yourself,” he chuckled softly, and my eyes went dead. “Yes, I do. I lie to myself. And the only lies I have ever told myself were the lies that you love me.” And of course, that I didn’t like my father’s best friend, but of course, I couldn’t say that out loud. “All this while, you have treated me like s**t, and even when you broke my heart, I never gave up on you. I kept lying to myself, claiming that you love me.” “Because I do!” he countered in a tender tone, taking a step forward. “No, you don’t!” I countered back, replacing that step backward because I wasn’t about to get manipulated by his narcissistic self. Silence settled in for a few seconds, yet it seemed like it had stayed for an hour because it was so f*****g loud. “Love is not when you hurt the one you love. Love is not when you break their heart, hurt their soul, and abuse their body. I may not know what love is, I may never have experienced true love, but you have made it abundantly clear, and now I know that you never loved me.” The tears I have been trying so hard to hold slipped, and this time everyone in the restaurant was already staring, but I couldn’t hold back. “All these years, I kept choosing you, even when you didn’t. To me, you were the best gift ever, but you took advantage of my lack of love and broke my heart at every given moment.” “Noria!” he called, taking a step forward and grabbing my wrist. “I said I am going to fix it!” he groaned tightly, trying to avoid the scene, but even though I wasn’t going to speak again, I also wasn’t going to let him drag me to wherever. “Let go of me,” I said, but his grip on my wrist tightened so damn hard that my skin turned red from how badly his nails were digging into it. My breath fluttered, and I clutched his hand firmly, trying to pull him away as he dragged me with him, but his grip was firm and my small strength could only do little. My lips trembled in anger, and my eyes turned red and blazing, but I couldn’t speak until a voice did. “Let go of that hand, or you might spend your entire miserable life seeking to have another.” The air in the restaurant stilled, and even without being told, I could tell the monster behind that tone. Nathan’s legs halted, and all conversations faltered because even the wind paused for a second. When I tilted my head back in the direction of the voice, Mr. Lucan was standing there, in the perfect 6’4 feet height, towering over every living thing in the room while staring dangerously at Nathan.
