Most residents in Deep Greenwood balanced a need for safety with their curiosity and peeked through the curtains to catch a glimpse of the party accompanying W. E. B. Dubois to the Dreamland Theatre. A few folks who had something to say greeted the men as they settled in on the sidewalk.
The taunts began right away. “Go back to New York,” was the most common, but others were much more specific.
