Chapter 5: The Silent Intruder

940 Words
The palace clock struck midnight. Most of the capital had fallen asleep. Only the palace guards, night patrols, and the Royal Vanguard remained awake. The Alliance Summit was too important to leave unprotected. ⸻ Nyx stood alone atop the western watchtower. The cool night breeze carried the scent of rain. Below, guards patrolled the palace grounds with torches in hand. Everything appeared normal. Too normal. She closed her eyes. Listened. The rustling of leaves. The distant splash of the Endless Stream. Footsteps… A bird taking flight. Then… Silence. Complete silence. Nyx’s eyes snapped open. “That’s impossible…” The palace gardens were never completely silent. ⸻ She hurried down the tower and found Master Kael studying maps inside the command room. “What is it?” “The birds.” Kael looked confused. “They’ve stopped singing.” “So?” “They never stop.” Kael immediately understood. Within seconds, he was on his feet. “Wake the Vanguard.” ⸻ Only minutes later, Azul, Bashan, Liora, Brakus, and Taren assembled in full battle gear. Kael spoke quietly. “We may have an intruder.” Taren smiled. “Finally.” Kael shot him a look. “This isn’t training.” The smile vanished. ⸻ The Vanguard split into pairs. Azul and Nyx searched the palace gardens. Bashan and Brakus inspected the eastern walls. Liora and Taren checked the rooftops. Kael remained near the council chamber. If someone had entered… That room would likely be their target. ⸻ The palace seemed peaceful. Too peaceful. Azul walked carefully beside Nyx. “You’ve been quiet.” “I always am.” “I mean quieter than usual.” She hesitated. “I have a bad feeling.” Azul nodded. “I trust your instincts.” Before she could respond… A faint crimson glow reflected across the surface of a nearby fountain. “There!” Nyx whispered. The two rushed forward. Hidden beneath the stone edge of the fountain was a small crystal, glowing faintly. Azul reached toward it. “Wait!” Nyx grabbed his wrist. “Don’t touch it.” The crystal suddenly cracked. A wave of crimson mist burst into the air. Both of them jumped back. The mist vanished almost instantly. Leaving only silence behind. “What was that?” Azul asked. Nyx knelt beside the shattered crystal. “I’ve never seen magic like this.” ⸻ Elsewhere… Bashan stopped walking. Brakus nearly walked into him. “What is it?” Bashan pointed upward. A shadow moved across the palace roof. “There!” Without hesitation, Bashan sprinted forward. The mysterious figure leapt effortlessly onto the next rooftop. “Stop!” Bashan shouted. The stranger answered with silence. The chase was on. ⸻ Across rooftops and narrow towers they raced. The masked intruder moved with impossible agility. Every jump was perfectly measured. Every landing soundless. Bashan smiled despite himself. “Finally…” “A real challenge.” He pushed himself even harder. The distance between them slowly closed. Just as Bashan prepared to leap— The stranger suddenly turned. For the briefest moment… Their eyes met. Cold. Emotionless. The masked figure threw a small metal sphere onto the rooftop. It exploded into thick black smoke. Bashan charged through it. But… The rooftop was empty. The intruder had vanished. ⸻ Liora and Taren arrived moments later. “You lost him?” Taren asked. Bashan frowned. “He disappeared.” Liora examined the rooftop. “No footprints.” “No broken tiles.” “It’s like he never existed.” Taren crouched near the edge. “Not exactly.” He held up a small object. A crimson feather. The three exchanged uneasy glances. ⸻ Back in the palace… The Vanguard reunited with Master Kael. Nyx placed the shattered crystal on the table. Bashan laid the crimson feather beside it. Kael’s face darkened. “I was hoping I’d never see these again.” Azul looked at him. “You know what they are?” Kael nodded slowly. “The crystal is a Resonance Shard.” “It can record conversations.” Everyone stared at him. “And the feather?” Liora asked. Kael picked it up carefully. “It belongs to the Crimson Ravens.” “The elite spies of the Crimson Order.” The room fell silent. “So they were here…” Brakus muttered. “They were.” Kael replied. “And they learned something tonight.” “What?” Azul asked. Kael looked around the room. “They’ve confirmed that every ruler is gathered in one place.” The weight of his words settled over everyone. If the Crimson Order wanted to strike… There would never be a better opportunity. ⸻ Far beyond the capital… Inside an abandoned cathedral swallowed by darkness… The masked intruder knelt before a towering throne. The hooded leader of the Crimson Order sat motionless. “Report.” The spy lowered his head. “The Alliance Summit has begun.” “And the Royal Vanguard?” The spy paused. “They’re stronger than expected.” A low chuckle echoed through the chamber. “Strength changes nothing.” The leader slowly rose from the throne. A massive map of the continent lay before him. Small crimson markers had been placed upon every allied kingdom. One by one… He pushed them closer to Azul. “The kings believe they’re gathering to secure peace.” His voice was calm. “But peace…” He smiled beneath his hood. “…is easiest to destroy when everyone is standing together.” The candles around the chamber suddenly extinguished. Leaving only darkness. And the quiet promise of a war yet to come.
