Chapter Ten

Lilith’s POV He slowly turned me around until our eyes met. My breath caught in my throat. His golden-brown eyes searched mine, not with anger… but with concern. Why was he looking at me like that? Nervously, I let out a small, awkward laugh and tucked a strand of my black hair behind my ear. Stop staring at him. Stop noticing how handsome he is. Trying to act as casually as possible, I slowly moved the scalpel behind my back. His eyes followed the movement immediately. “What do you have behind your back?” he asked softly. My heart pounded against my ribs. “N-Nothing.” His gaze dropped to my trembling hand. “Lilith…” The way he said my name made my stomach flutter. “I don’t want to take it from you. I just don’t want you to get hurt.” I swallowed hard. “You expect me to trust you?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “I woke up in a strange place. I was poisoned. I don’t know who you are. I don’t even know where I am. You keep talking about things you won’t explain. Wouldn’t you be scared?” For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then he nodded. “I would.” The simple answer caught me off guard. He slowly lifted both of his hands where I could see them. “I’m not going to touch you. I’m not going to force you, but I need you to put the scalpel down. I promise you’re safe here.” My fingers tightened around the handle. I wanted to believe him… But I couldn’t. With shaking hands, I slowly brought the scalpel back into view. His eyes never left mine. “I-I…” I stammered. He glanced down at the blade before looking back at me. “Were you going to hurt me?” His voice was so husky and warm. Gentle. I had to force myself to stop thinking about it. I looked away. “If you want me to be honest…. Yes. Yes I was” I said placing the scalpel down back in the drawer. “I mean what would you do?” I looked back at him noticing that his golden eyes never left me. Making a shiver run down my spine. “Well thank you for being honest with me” he said with a smile. God even his teeth were perfect. “Let’s get you back into bed you weren’t supposed to stand up anyways. And honestly I’m surprised you are after everything you went through” he said gently guiding me to the bed I reluctantly laid back down “My name is James, James Blackwood” he said sitting down in the side of my bed making the mattress dip “James..” I said softly back to him. I noticed a small color change in his eyes as he stared at me. Did his eyes brighten? Maybe it’s the poison making me see things. I cleared my throat “Why am I here and where is my best friend” “Your friend, I’m not sure about but I promise we will look for her” “And you’re here because you were hurt.” I raised an eyebrow. “Well… no shit.” James laughed in response What?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. He shook his head, still smiling. “Nothing.” “You’ve just got more attitude than I expected.” “I was poisoned, kidnapped, and woke up in a strange place.” I crossed my arms. “I think I’m allowed a little attitude.” He held his hands up in surrender. “Fair enough.” I stared at him for a long moment. “Why did you and your friends chase me?” He looked down at his hands before meeting my eyes again. “Because I was trying to protect you.” “Protect me?” I frowned. “From who?” I watched as his jaw tightened. “The people who poisoned you. But by the time we found you… you were already running from us.” “I know how it looked.” “And if I were in your position…” “I probably would’ve run too.” James POV “You need to tell her she’s our mate” my wolf Onyx said to me from the back of my mind “I know but I don’t want to blurt it out” “She needs to know she’s our mate, our future Luna” I pushed him to the back of my mind and I took a deep breath I watched as her gaze drifted down to where my thumb absentmindedly brushed over the back of her hand. The familiar sparks danced between us. I know she can feel them too. “Can I ask you something?” She hesitated before giving a small nod. “What?” “Have you noticed… anything strange since you woke up?” She frowned. “What do you mean?” My eyes flickered to our hands. When I rub my thumb over your hand do you feel anything?” A faint blush spread across her cheeks. She looked away. “…Maybe.” “What did it feel like?” She was quiet for a long moment. “It was…” She bit her lip. “Warm.” She glanced back at me. “And every time you touched me it feels like electricity.” Relief flooded through me. “I was hoping you’d say that.” Her eyebrows pulled together. “Why?” I took a slow breath. “Because… I feel it too.” Silence filled the room. “I know what I’m about to tell you is going to sound completely insane.” She pulled her hand from me and crossed her arms. “Try me.” A nervous laugh escaped me. “In my world… Every werewolf is born with someone they’re destined to spend the rest of their life with.” She blinked. “Werewolf?” I nodded. “When we meet that person our wolves recognize them. We call that person our mate.”
