Lilith’s POV
My heart sank.
“The people who attacked me…” I whispered. “They were rogues?”
James nodded, his expression growing serious. “Yes.”
A lump formed in my throat.
“You mean… they weren’t trying to hurt me or actually trying to kill me?”
My stomach twisted.
James was quiet for a long moment before answering. “I don’t know what their intentions were. But I do know they weren’t there by accident. They were looking for someone.”
I stared at him.
“You think… They were looking for me?”
His silence was all the answer I needed.
Fear settled heavily in my chest.
“But why?”
“I’ve never met them. I’ve never done anything to them. I didn’t even know they existed”
James stepped a little closer.
“I know.”
“That’s exactly why we’re going to figure this out.”

James’s POV
I walked Lilith back to her room in the clinic and helped her settle into bed.
Quinn carefully removed the bandages from Lilith’s leg, studying the wound with narrowed eyes.
“You’re healing remarkably fast,” Quinn said.
Lilith gave a small, sheepish smile.
“Yeah… I’ve always healed a little faster than everyone else.”
Quinn looked up.
“Oh?”
“Do you know why?”
Lilith shrugged.
“No. Maybe genetics?”
“Hmm…”
Quinn didn’t look convinced, but she simply nodded and continued examining the wound.
Hey, Alpha. I found something.
Spike’s voice echoed through my mind.
What is it?
You might want to come see this.
I let out a quiet sigh.
Of all the times…
I looked over at Lilith.
“I have to step away for a little while.”
Her smile faded almost instantly.
“Some Alpha duties came up. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
She tried to smile.
“Oh… Okay.”
Even though she was trying to hide it, I could see the disappointment in her eyes.
A satisfied rumble vibrated through my chest.
She wants us to stay.
My wolf sounded entirely too pleased.
Let’s make this quick. I hate being away from our mate.
I couldn’t argue with that.
Agreed.
I reached for Lilith’s hand, lifting it gently.
Before thinking twice, I pressed a soft kiss against the back of her hand.
Warmth spread through me the instant our skin touched.
Lilith’s cheeks flushed a delicate shade of pink.
“I won’t be long,” I promised.
I stood and looked at Quinn.
“Please stay with her until I get back.”
Quinn raised an eyebrow.
“I wasn’t planning on going anywhere.”
A small laugh escaped me.
“I figured.”
With one last glance toward Lilith, I turned and left the room.
As soon as I stepped into the hallway, I mind-linked both of my trusted warriors.
Spike. Liam. Meet me in my office. Now.
—
As I walked into my office, Spike and Liam were already waiting for me.
Neither of them looked amused.
Whatever they had found. It was serious.
“What was so important that it couldn’t wait?” I asked impatiently.
Spike leaned back in his chair.
“Well” he smirked. “While you were making heart eyes at your mate”
Liam rolled his eyes.
“Spike and I were actually doing some research.”
I ignored Spike’s teasing.
“What did you find?”
The amusement disappeared from Spike’s face.
“Lilith is adopted.”
I froze.
“What?”
Spike slid a manila envelope across my desk.
“We found the adoption records.”
I opened the file.
Eighteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Jensen legally adopted an infant named Lilith.
My eyes scanned farther down the page.
“She was found on their front porch…”
I read quietly.
“wrapped in a purple scarf with a note that simply said Please take care of our daughter, Lilith.”
I looked back up.
“Did you find anything about her biological parents?”
Liam shook his head.
“Nothing.”
“It’s like they vanished.”
I leaned back in my chair, running a hand through my hair.
“Does Lilith even know she’s adopted?”
Spike shrugged.
“We couldn’t find that out.”
I sighed.
“I haven’t asked, and honestly… I don’t think now is the right time. She’s only been here a week.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Liam spoke.
“What if Quinn runs some blood work?”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“If her healing is really that unusual… Maybe her blood will tell us something.”
Spike nodded.
“It couldn’t hurt.”
I considered it for a moment before reaching out through the mind link.
Quinn.
Her voice answered almost instantly.
Yes, Alpha?
Can you do me a favor?
Spike and Liam uncovered something about Lilith. She’s adopted, and we can’t find any information about her biological family.
There was a brief pause.
Go on…
I’d like you to run some blood tests. See if there’s anything medically unusual that might explain how quickly she’s healing.
Quinn sighed.
James… I could have told you there was something unusual just by looking at her wound. No human heals this fast.
I couldn’t argue with that.
Still… I’d like proof.
Another pause.
Then she laughed softly.
Fine. I’ll run the tests. But next time, try listening to your doctor the first time.
I smiled despite myself.
Thank you, Quinn.
Yeah, yeah
I looked back at my Beta and Delta standing to my feet. “Please keep doing research on her because why would she be hunted by rouges if she isn’t human”
I closed the envelope and slid it back to Spike. “Keep this between us, I don’t want anyone else to know about this until we figure out what’s going on”
Both Liam and Spike nodded.
I walked out of my office and made my way back to the clinic.
Whatever she is she’s ours, my wolf said proudly.
I smiled.
He’s right.
It didn’t matter whether Lilith was human, werewolf, or something neither of us understood.
The Moon Goddess had chosen her to be my mate. I would spend the rest of my life protecting her, and loving her with every part of my being.
