Chapter Twelve

906 Words
Lilith’s POV “Your vitals have been improving remarkably fast,” Quinn said as she examined the wound on my leg before checking the IV fluids hanging beside my bed. “And these are staying until you’re actually drinking enough water.” James said sternly I shot James a pointed look. “You’re so stubborn.” “I am not,” I protested. James folded his arms with a smirk. “You’ve had three glasses of water today.” “I’ve had… enough.” Quinn raised an eyebrow at me. “You’ve had three. You need to drink about 90-100 oz which is about 11 to 12 cups and no, coffee does not count as water” I sighed dramatically. “Traitors. Both of you.” James chuckled while Quinn simply rolled her eyes and continued changing my bandages. Over the past few days, Quinn and I had gotten pretty close. I learned about her twin boys and how her and mate Mika met at a local bar. He was from the neighboring pack and decided come come to James pack James had told me almost everything there was to know about werewolves and his pack. His pack name was Silver Shadow pack. How they healed faster than human, lived longer than humans, how wolfsbane was deadly to them. How every pack was led by an Alpha, supported by a Beta and a Delta. And how the Alpha’s mate became the Luna—his equal in every sense of the word. It was… A lot to take in. James had quietly mentioned that, because I was his mate, I would one day become his Luna. I wasn’t ready to think about that. Every time someone brought it up, I found a way to change the subject. Thankfully, Spike usually helped without even realizing it. I’d met James’s Beta, Spike, and his Delta, Liam. They all grew up together and that’s why James allows them to walk after making fun of him. They were… entertaining, to say the least. Especially Spike, I was told by Quinn he was the playboy of the two. And to stay away from him But when he found out how I called James a puppy he hadn’t stopped teasing James. “I still can’t believe our fearless Alpha got called a giant puppy,” Spike had laughed. “It wasn’t a giant puppy,” James muttered. “It was worse,” Liam said with a grin. “You got demoted from terrifying Alpha to house pet.” Spike burst into laughter. “I’m getting you a collar for your birthday.” James groaned, rubbing a hand over his face. “I’m never going to hear the end of this, am I?” Spike and Liam answered in perfect unison. “No.” Despite everything that had happened and how overwhelming these past few days have been… I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. ⸻ Quinn’s POV Time had slipped away, and before I knew it, night had settled over the pack house. “I’ll come back in the morning, I know Alpha James is gonna be coming back with some food, do you need anything else from me before I go?” “No I’m good, thank you though” I heard Lilith’s stomach growl I chuckled to myself After checking Lilith’s vitals one last time, I made a few notes in her chart before stepping out of the room. As I closed the door behind me, I found James heading inside to be with Lilith bringing some takeout along with him. “Alpha could I speak with you a second?” He immediately straightened “Everything okay?” he asked worried. I nodded. “Yes everything is okay.” His shoulders relaxed ever so slightly. “Then what is it you want to talk about?.” We walked a few steps down the hallway, far enough that our voices wouldn’t carry into Lilith’s room. “Is something wrong?” James asked, concern creeping back into his voice. “I don’t know yet.” I glanced down at the chart in my hands. “Lilith’s healing…” I paused, searching for the right words. “… isn’t normal” His brow furrowed. “What do you mean?” “I’ve treated hundreds of humans over the years.” I flipped through a few pages. “With the severity of her wound and the amount of blood she lost, she should still be bedridden.” I met his eyes. “Instead…” “She’s already putting weight on her leg.” James frowned. “Could it just be that she’s healing well because she found her mate. I know once you find your mate your healing does quicken?” I slowly shook my head. “No, you haven’t even marked her yet. The tissue around the wound is regenerating much faster than any human I’ve ever treated.” I lowered my voice. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Silence settled between us. James looked back toward Lilith’s room. “What are you thinking?” I hesitated. “I don’t want to make assumptions. But… I don’t think Lilith is entirely human.” James stared at me. “What?” “I know how crazy that sounds.” “But her recovery doesn’t make medical sense.” I closed the chart. “I think there’s something about her that we don’t know.”
