Lilith POV
The trip to our apartment actually felt pretty quick for a three-hour drive. Ari and I spent the whole ride laughing and talking about all the crazy things we could do now that we were finally on our own. She also couldn’t stop talking about the new guy she’d been seeing.
“We’re here!” Ari exclaimed as she pulled the moving truck into a parking space and quickly hopped out.
“s**t, that was quick,” I chuckled, loosely wrapping my old purple scarf around my neck before climbing out of the truck. “I wish every drive went by that fast.”
“I know, right?” she laughed. “Come on, let’s try to get most of our stuff inside. I came by earlier to pick up our keys, so we’re all set to move in.” She lifted the metal door on the back of the truck. “We’d better hurry. It’s getting late.”
I glanced toward the horizon, watching the sun slowly sink behind the trees as the moon prepared to take its place in the sky.
“I guess you’re right. Thank God there’s an elevator here because I don’t think I’d survive carrying all this up the stairs.”
I bent down and picked up one of the heavier boxes.
“Hey, you’ve got to work on those muscles. Show off what your mama gave you. Feel the burn!” Ari teased as she started carrying a box toward the stairwell.
“Yeah… you have fun with that. I’m taking the elevator.”
As I reached out to press the elevator button, the doors slid open.
A girl about my age stepped out.
She had jet-black hair, a messy shirt, and was in the middle of pulling on a pair of worn biker boots. Her makeup looked slightly smeared, and strands of hair clung to her fair skin as though she’d been sweating.
“Had a fun night?” I asked sarcastically.
Her dark chocolate eyes snapped to mine with a glare that practically screamed, Don’t mess with me.
Without saying a word, she looked back down and finished tying her boot.
Then she froze.
Her head slowly lifted.
She sniffed the air.
Her eyes widened.
“Rogue…” she whispered so quietly I could barely make it out.
“What did you sa—”
Before I could finish, she took off sprinting toward the woods behind the apartment complex.
“What the hell?” I muttered.
Why is she running into the woods?
Before I could think about it any longer, the elevator doors slid shut and carried me to the second floor.
“Who was that?” Ari asked as the elevator doors opened.
I yelped, dropping my box onto the floor to see Ari standing there with another box of clothes.
“Damn, girl. Am I really that scary?” she laughed.
“I hate it when you sneak up on me. You always do that.” I shook my head, laughing as I picked the box back up. “But seriously… how are you already carrying a second box?”
“Oh, you know…” she shrugged with a grin.
“Why was that girl running?” Ari asked quickly changing the subject
“I have no idea.” I looked back toward the forest. “She looked like she just had a one-night stand, though.”
“Damn.” Ari laughed. “Somebody must’ve been hungry.”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“You should probably stay away from her,” Ari added. “She looks like trouble.”
I watched the tree line for another moment before following Ari down the hallway.
When I reached our apartment, the front door was already wide open.
Ari had beaten me there. Stepping inside, I looked around in amazement. A two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment.
It was perfect.
Sure, it wasn’t the traditional college experience of sharing a tiny apartment with four strangers and fighting over one bathroom…
But honestly?
I preferred this.
Besides, we were only a few minutes from campus.
I took a deep breath.
The apartment smelled like fresh paint and new beginnings.
“I call dibs on the master bedroom!” Ari shouted as she took off running.
“Hey! That’s not fair!” I laughed. “I didn’t even get a chance to look around!”
Following her into the room, I couldn’t help but smile.
The bedroom was huge.
It even had its own bathroom.
I stepped inside and set my box on the countertop before looking at my reflection in the mirror.
Tan skin.
Long brown hair.
Hazel eyes that always seemed to change color depending on what I wore.
I’d always wondered why.
No one else in my family had hazel eyes.
“Wanna check out the other bedroom?” Ari asked as she walked in behind me.
“Yeah.”
The second bedroom was almost the same size, just without the attached bathroom. The bathroom was on the other side of the hallway
“I’m honestly fine with either room,” I said with a shrug. “You can have the master if you want.”
Ari frowned.
“Wait no now I feel bad.”
We both laughed as we did rock paper scissors for the master bedroom and bringing more boxes inside.
