A silent answer

The corridors were silent now. The court had dispersed like a storm finally spent. Kade led the way down the winding halls — not by force, not by command. Aria followed him because... Because some part of her wanted to understand. The guards faded away as they approached the King’s private wing. No audience now. No judgment. Just the two of them. Kade stopped before a massive door carved with ancient runes. He pushed it open and stepped aside — letting her choose to enter. No orders. No expectations. Aria hesitated — her instincts warring inside her. But after a breath, she walked in. The room was dark, lit only by the fire crackling low in the hearth. It smelled of pine and leather, smoke and something distinctly him. Warm. Dangerous. Familiar in a way that made her heart ache. The door clicked softly shut behind them. For a moment, neither spoke. The space between them stretched thin, taut like a drawn bow. Finally, Kade moved — crossing the room, but not coming too close. He poured a glass of water from a crystal decanter, handed it to her without a word. Aria took it with trembling fingers. Their hands brushed — a ghost of contact — and heat surged up her arm, unwanted, undeniable. "You didn’t have to spare me," Kade said at last, his voice low, rough like gravel. "In front of them. You could have humiliated me. You would’ve been right to." Aria studied him. The proud, ruthless Alpha King — standing there not as a ruler, but as a man stripped bare. "I didn’t want revenge," she said quietly. "I wanted the truth." The fire popped softly between them. Outside, somewhere distant, a wolf howled to the rising moon. Kade’s mouth twisted in something like a smile — but there was no joy in it. "I was blind," he admitted. "I wanted the bond to be real so badly... I ignored everything my wolf screamed at me." He met her gaze then — and Aria flinched at the rawness there. Regret. Longing. Self-loathing. "That’s not an excuse," he said hoarsely. "It’s just the truth." Silence fell again. But this time, it wasn’t empty. It hummed with everything unspoken. Aria shifted, setting the untouched glass down. The movement drew his eyes — tracking her like prey. When he spoke again, his voice was so quiet she almost missed it. "I don’t want a Luna who’s trapped." He swallowed hard. "I want you. Or nothing." The words struck something deep inside her — something fragile, still bleeding. She wanted to believe him. Gods, how she wanted to believe. But trust wasn't born in a night. And she wasn’t that naive girl anymore, dreaming of fated love. Aria stepped closer — not enough to touch, but enough for him to feel her breath. She tilted her head slightly, studying him as if seeing him for the first time. "Words are easy," she murmured. "Show me, Kade." For a long, breathless moment, neither of them moved. Then — so slowly it hurt — Kade sank to his knees before her. No crown. No armor. No pride. Just a man offering his heart — trembling, uncertain, real. Aria’s chest tightened painfully. Her wolf whimpered low inside her — recognizing the truth even when her mind resisted. She didn’t touch him. Not yet. But she didn’t turn away either. And for now... That was enough. *** The fire crackled softly behind them, throwing shadows across the room. Kade stayed on his knees — silent, patient — as if he understood that any wrong move might shatter whatever fragile thread bound them together. Aria’s throat worked as she swallowed hard, her heart pounding so loudly she was sure he could hear it. This wasn’t some courtly performance. This was real. The space between them buzzed with it — a raw, aching gravity. Slowly, as if afraid she might vanish, Kade reached up. His hand hovered near her cheek — trembling slightly, something almost reverent in the way he hesitated. Let me, his wolf seemed to plead. Just once. Aria didn’t move. Didn’t breathe. Kade's fingers brushed her skin. So light. So careful. A whisper of touch that sent a violent shiver down her spine. Her lashes fluttered shut — just for a second. A betrayal of how much she felt it. When she opened her eyes again, Kade was closer. Not touching her fully. Just... waiting. Giving her the choice. The smell of him surrounded her — smoke, pine, something wild and masculine and heartbreakingly familiar. Her wolf whimpered again inside her chest, pacing, restless. And Kade, gods help her, didn’t push. He stayed where he was — proud, powerful — offering everything and demanding nothing. "Aria," he breathed her name like a prayer. Like it hurt to say it. Like he was afraid it would be the last time. The distance between their mouths shrank — inch by inch — breath by breath — until she could feel the heat of him against her lips. All she would have to do was lean in. Just a little. Just enough. Her heart screamed yes. Her pride whispered no. Her fear trembled somewhere in between. Aria closed the last inch— And at the very last second — she turned her head away. Kade froze. His breath hitched. Aria stepped back, just enough to break the charge between them. Her voice, when it came, was soft. Trembling. "I’m not ready," she whispered. Pain flickered across his face — raw, brutal — but he bowed his head, accepting it without a word. Without blame. She took another step back. Another breath. "I need to know I’m not just a replacement for what you lost," she said, her voice stronger now. "I need to know you see me. Not just a bond." Kade rose slowly to his feet. He towered over her — a king, a warrior, a man. But when he spoke, his words were low and certain: "I see you, Aria." He touched his chest, where his heart beat strong and sure. "And I’ll prove it. Every day. For as long as it takes." Their eyes locked — fierce and unyielding — not enemies, not lovers, not yet. Two souls on the verge of something vast and terrifying. Something real. *** Aria woke to soft golden light spilling through the high windows. For a long moment, she lay there, blinking up at the carved stone ceiling, trying to remember where she was. Not the infirmary. Not the lonely room she called hers. Not a cell. The King’s wing. His private domain. But he — Her heart jumped. She turned — and found the space beside her untouched. No Kade. No warmth left behind. She sat up slowly, a strange hollow blooming in her chest before she shoved it away. This was what she wanted, wasn’t it? Space. She swung her legs over the side of the bed — and that’s when she saw it. On the table near the hearth — not a note, not a royal decree, but a single, beautiful thing: A moon lily. White as starlight. Rare beyond reason. A flower that only bloomed once every three years, touched by the full blessing of the goddess. A symbol of loyalty. Of patience. Of unspoken vows. Aria rose slowly, her bare feet silent against the stone floor. She crossed the room and picked up the flower with trembling fingers. No signature. No demands. Just... a promise. Soft. Waiting. Real. Her throat tightened painfully. Across the room, folded neatly on a chair, were new clothes — simple, clean, made of soft fabric that would allow her to move freely. Another quiet gesture. Another choice, placed in her hands. Kade hadn’t tried to chain her here. He hadn’t used duty, or pride, or mate-bond instincts to trap her. He had simply... left the door open. The realization hit her harder than any force. He’s giving me the freedom to choose him. Or not. She closed her eyes, the moon lily pressed to her chest. And for the first time in so long, she didn’t feel like prey. She didn’t feel small, or disposable. She felt seen. Wanted. Not for what she could give. Not for what she could heal. But for who she was. Aria opened her eyes, squaring her shoulders. Not ready to run. Not yet ready to leap. But ready, maybe, to stay. At least... a little longer. --- The hallways of the King’s wing were strangely empty as Aria walked through them, dressed in the simple clothes he'd left for her. Soft boots. Dark pants. A tunic that fit too perfectly, as if he knew every inch of her already. It should have made her feel bare. Instead... she felt strong. The moon lily was tucked carefully behind her ear — its petals brushing her temple like a secret kiss. No guards stopped her. No servants whispered. As if the entire castle held its breath, waiting to see what she would choose. She found Kade in the practice yard, sparring alone against a wooden dummy. No armor. No shirt. Only the hard lines of his muscles, shining with sweat under the morning sun. Every movement precise. Brutal. Controlled. For a long moment, she just watched him — the way he fought like a man who didn’t fear death, but who would fight it anyway. Then, as if sensing her gaze, he stilled. The practice sword lowered slowly. Kade turned. Their eyes met across the distance. The world narrowed until there was only him and her and the storm rising between them. His gaze dropped — caught — on the moon lily tucked behind her ear. And something in his posture shifted. Hope. Sharp and dangerous. He didn’t smile. He didn’t run to her like some lovesick fool. He simply straightened — proud, still, waiting — offering her the same silent promise he had the night before: I’ll come only if you want me to. I’ll stay only if you ask me to. Aria’s heart battered her ribs. Every step toward him felt heavy with things she wasn’t ready to name. But she didn’t turn away. She didn’t run. Instead, she walked — slowly, deliberately — until she stood before him. Close enough to feel the heat of his body. Close enough to smell the leather and salt and pine of him. Neither of them spoke. The air between them shivered with restraint. Kade dropped the practice sword at his side, the clatter loud and final. He lowered his head slightly — not submission, but deference — waiting. And Aria... Aria reached up, slowly, trembling a little — and brushed her fingers along the edge of the moon lily. A silent answer. I’m not yours yet. But I’m willing to try. Kade exhaled like he’d been holding his breath for years. Still — still — he didn’t touch her. But the look in his silver eyes was a caress all the same — a promise that when she was ready, he would be there. Not to take. But to belong. With her. Beside her. Always.
