THE public CLAIM

829 Words
The room crackled with tension. Even Marek, who had looked so ready to see Aria fall, now watched her with something closer to wariness. "Selene Greystone," Marek said, voice low and merciless. "You are guilty of scent-theft, bond manipulation, and conspiracy against the throne." He lifted his staff. "Your punishment is exile. Immediate and permanent. Should you step onto sacred pack lands again..." He smiled — a cold, vicious thing. "You forfeit your life." Selene’s scream tore through the chamber, wild and broken. But the guards dragged her away, her cries growing smaller, fainter, until they disappeared into the stone halls beyond. Silence fell. The court stared at Aria — and at the King who stood so unapologetically at her side. Marek straightened. "The matter of justice is settled," he said. But he hesitated. Something unspoken remained — something greater than punishment. It was Kade who spoke next, and when he did, it was not as a warrior, but as a king addressing his people: "I was deceived," he said, his voice carrying to every dark corner. "But my wolf was never fooled." He turned fully toward Aria then — and before the entire court, before every noble, every elder, every whispering wolf — he knelt. A collective gasp rose. Aria froze, her heart hammering so hard it hurt. Kade reached for her hand again, pressing it against his chest — over his heart. "I claim you, Aria," he said, low and rough, "not because the bond demands it, not because the law requires it." He lifted his gaze, and in it, she saw every unsaid word — every wound, every vow. "I claim you because I choose you." The hall burst into murmurs. Some in awe. Some in outrage. But Kade didn’t waver. He stood slowly, still holding her hand, turning to face his people. "This is your future Luna," he announced. "Chosen by the King. Chosen by the Wolf. Chosen by me." The old laws did not demand a ceremony here. But even Marek, ever rigid, bent his head slightly — the ancient sign of acceptance. One by one, others followed — reluctant, stunned, but bowing nonetheless. Until the great court itself bowed before the girl they once dismissed. Aria could hardly breathe. Not from fear — but from the wild, terrifying joy that bloomed inside her chest, fierce and uncontainable. She had been thrown away. Rejected. Lied about. And now — she was being chosen. Not for what they wanted her to be. But for everything she already was. Beside her, Kade squeezed her hand gently, as if grounding her. We rise together, that touch said. We burn together. And Aria, at last, smiled — the first real, unbroken smile she had given in a long, long time. The night was not over. Their enemies would not sleep easily. There were battles still to come. But for this moment — She was no one's rejected mate. She was the Luna who would change everything. *** The court was still bowing, but Aria... Aria wasn’t moving. Her hand was in Kade’s — his grip warm, steady. He had just declared her his Luna before the world. But inside her, a storm raged. This wasn’t how it was supposed to feel. Not rushed. Not tangled with betrayal and stolen bonds. Not... tainted. Slowly, carefully, Aria pulled her hand back from his chest. Not roughly. Not cruelly. Just enough. The murmuring in the hall stuttered to a halt. Kade’s silver eyes searched her face, something like pain flickering there. But he didn’t reach for her again. He only straightened, a muscle ticking in his jaw. Aria’s voice — when she found it — was steady, but not cruel. "I thank you," she said, inclining her head formally, "for defending my name. For honoring the truth." Her words echoed in the chamber, dignified, strong. Not a healer. Not a rejected mate. A woman choosing her own path. "But a bond is more than a public claim," she continued. "It’s more than loyalty in the court." Her eyes lifted to his, calm and clear. "It’s trust. It’s time. It's something we will have to earn — together. If we choose to." Another hush swept the hall. Not shocked gasps this time — something quieter. More reverent. Even Marek’s gaze flickered with reluctant approval. Kade didn’t argue. He only bowed his head to her — not as a king to a subject, but as a man honoring a woman’s will. "As you wish," he said quietly. "No throne will ever force your heart, Aria." The words fell between them, solemn and binding. Not an ending. A beginning. One they would shape — not fate, not courts, not laws. Aria finally stepped back, standing proud beside him but not tethered to him. Not yet. But maybe, someday, by choice. And the court... The court would remember this day. The day a king offered everything — and a woman, once discarded, chose herself first.
