Chapter 3

604 Words
Looking at the receipt for the twin stroller and recalling Chloe's triumphant smirk in the office, I felt the blood freeze entirely in my veins. A horrifying realization began to take shape in my mind. I thought Christian had just grown distant over the last three years. But the truth was, he had been cheating on me this whole time. ***** Early the next morning, Christian grabbed his packed suitcase and threw out a cold order. "I'm going on a business trip for a week. Don't call me." Watching him practically run out the door, I didn't say a word. The second his car was gone, I hit the gas and followed the address on the stroller receipt. It led me to an upscale villa complex in the suburbs. After walking only a short distance along the outer wrought-iron fence, I witnessed that ridiculous and heartbreaking sight in the garden of a certain villa. My husband, who refused to lift a finger at home—the man who would blow a gasket over a spilled drop of water—was down on one knee on the grass. With infinite patience and gentleness, he used a wet wipe to clean the drool off the mouths of two toddlers. Judging by their size, the twins were at least two years old. Ten months in the womb plus two years of growth meant exactly three years. Doing the math, I realized this coincided perfectly with the time three years ago when his personality flipped and the silent treatment began! Just then, Chloe strolled out of the villa carrying a fruit platter, naturally cuddling into Christian's embrace. The sunlight spilled over them as they laughed and chatted, making them look exactly like a truly happy family of four. Hiding behind a large oak tree, I bit my lip so hard. Fighting the agonizing pain in my chest, I pulled out my phone and hit Record. As I zoomed in, the wind carried Chloe's sweet, whiny voice right to my ears. "Christian, when can we finally be together out in the open? If Sarah finds out, is she going to take half your money?" Christian paused from feeding the kids and snorted, a resentful gleam flashing in his eyes. "Relax. She owes me. Not only am I going to make sure she leaves with absolutely nothing, but I'm also going to ruin her reputation. It's her karma!" Karma? I glared at the familiar face on my screen, feeling nothing but pure absurdity. I was the one who stood by him when he had nothing, helping him build his fortune from the ground up. I was the one who gave up a thriving career to become a housewife just to nurse his dying mother. My health was completely ruined years ago from taking care of them. What exactly did I owe him? Why did he have to use such a cruel and manipulative way to ruin my life? A gust of frigid wind blew down my collar, completely drying up the last pathetic tear in my eye. The cruel scene playing out before me proved that my five years of absolute devotion were nothing but a sick joke. With eerie calmness, I stopped recording and uploaded the video to my cloud drive. When I turned around to leave, I felt absolutely zero attachment. Once inside my car, I dialed my senior alumnus, Elliot Harrison, who happened to be a top-tier divorce lawyer. "I need a divorce," I stated. "Christian has illegitimate kids and is hiding assets. Dig into his finances. I want every single penny that belongs to me back."
