The evening of the Autumn Charity Gala finally arrived.
For weeks, Willow Creek High had buzzed with excitement, and now the school gymnasium had been transformed into something magical.
Golden fairy lights were draped across the ceiling like stars. White and gold flowers decorated every table. Soft music floated through the room while students in elegant dresses and tailored suits filled the hall with laughter.
It looked like something straight out of one of Rory's favorite romance novels.
Upstairs, Rory stood in front of her bedroom mirror, taking a deep breath.
She wore the dusty-blue dress she and Emma had chosen together. The flowing fabric reached her ankles, and a delicate silver necklace rested against her collarbone. Her hair had been loosely curled, framing her face naturally.
Mrs. Hart smiled from the doorway.
"My little girl..."
"Mum..."
"You look beautiful."
Rory smiled nervously.
"I'm suddenly scared."
"Of what?"
"What if I trip while dancing?"
Mrs. Hart laughed.
"If you do, Noah will catch you."
Rory's cheeks turned pink.
"You sound very confident."
"I've watched him catch you your whole life."
At exactly six-thirty, the doorbell rang.
Mr. Hart opened the front door.
Standing outside was Noah.
He wore a well-fitted black suit with a navy-blue tie that matched Rory's dress almost perfectly. His hair was neatly styled, though one stubborn strand still refused to stay in place.
Mr. Hart smiled.
"Well, don't you clean up nicely."
"Thank you, sir."
"You here for my daughter?"
"I am."
Mr. Hart pretended to think.
"Hmm..."
"Dad," Rory called from the hallway.
"You can't scare him."
"I wasn't going to."
He grinned.
"I was just reminding him to bring you home safely."
"I always do," Noah replied sincerely.
"I know."
Mr. Hart stepped aside.
"Have a wonderful evening."
When Rory reached the doorway, Noah looked up.
For a long moment...
Neither of them spoke.
"You..."
Noah finally managed.
"...look amazing."
Rory smiled shyly.
"So do you."
Mrs. Hart quietly nudged her husband.
"They're adorable."
"I heard that," Rory mumbled.
The drive to the school was surprisingly quiet.
Not awkward.
Just... different.
Finally, Noah broke the silence.
"You nervous?"
"A little."
"You'll be fine."
"What about you?"
"I'm mostly worried about stepping on your feet again."
She laughed.
"Please don't."
"I'll try my best."
When they arrived, Emma hurried toward them the moment they entered the ballroom.
"There you are!"
She stopped in front of them.
Then she looked from Rory to Noah.
Back to Rory.
Then Noah again.
"Oh."
"What?" Rory asked.
"You two accidentally matched."
Rory looked down.
The blue accents on Noah's tie perfectly complemented her dress.
"We didn't plan this."
Emma smirked.
"I'm sure you didn't."
Dinner passed quickly.
Students laughed and chatted while the principal thanked everyone for supporting the fundraiser.
Soon, Mrs. Harrison stepped onto the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
A hush fell over the room.
"It's time for the opening dance."
Rory immediately looked at Noah.
"You remember the steps?"
"Barely."
"We're doomed."
"We survived practice."
"That's true."
He offered her his hand.
"Shall we?"
She smiled.
"We shall."
Soft piano music filled the ballroom.
Couples moved gracefully across the polished floor.
Noah rested one hand gently at Rory's waist while she placed hers on his shoulder.
"Ready?"
"No."
"Too late."
They began to dance.
One...
Two...
Three...
One...
Two...
Three...
This time, no one stepped on anyone's feet.
They moved naturally, almost effortlessly.
"You've improved," Noah whispered.
"So have you."
"I only had the best partner."
Rory smiled.
"You practiced that line."
"I did."
"It's still nice."
As the song continued, the room around them seemed to fade away.
There were no classmates.
No teachers.
No whispers.
Just the music.
And each other.
"You know..." Noah said softly.
"What?"
"I've been thinking."
"That's dangerous."
He laughed.
"It usually is."
She smiled.
"What have you been thinking about?"
"How strange it is."
"What?"
"We've known each other for almost our whole lives."
"Yeah."
"And somehow..."
He looked into her eyes.
"...every year I feel like I discover something new about you."
Rory's heart skipped a beat.
"I could say the same about you."
The music slowed.
Almost instinctively, they moved a little closer.
Neither seemed to notice.
Across the room, Emma watched with a knowing smile.
"They're finally seeing it," she whispered.
Beside her, Lily nodded.
"I think they've always seen it."
"They just didn't understand it."
The song ended to loud applause.
As Rory and Noah stepped apart, both looked slightly embarrassed by how close they'd been standing.
"You survived," Noah teased.
"So did you."
"No injuries."
"That's a new record."
They laughed together.
After the dance, everyone headed outside to the courtyard for dessert and fireworks.
The cool night air carried the sweet scent of roses from the school gardens.
Students gathered on the lawn, looking up at the sky.
The first firework exploded overhead.
Brilliant gold.
Then red.
Then blue.
The colors reflected in Rory's eyes as she watched in amazement.
"It's beautiful," she whispered.
"It is."
She smiled.
"I love fireworks."
"I know."
"You remember?"
"You've loved them since you were six."
"You remember everything."
He smiled.
"Only the important things."
Without thinking, Rory slipped her hand into Noah's.
He looked down.
Then back at her.
Neither of them pulled away.
The fireworks continued bursting across the sky.
Their fingers remained intertwined.
For several quiet moments...
Neither spoke.
Neither needed to.
Because somehow...
Holding hands suddenly felt as natural as breathing.
And neither wanted to let go.
Far beyond the school grounds, beneath the old oak tree in Willow Creek Park, the little metal lunchbox rested beneath the earth.
Its lock had grown rusty with time.
Its letters had yellowed with age.
But the promises inside...
Were still waiting.
And very soon...
Those promises would ask two childhood best friends a question they could no longer avoid.
What if "always" had meant something more all along?
