Chapter 10- ONE DANCE.

The rumors refused to disappear. By Wednesday morning, it seemed as though everyone at Willow Creek High had decided that Rory Hart and Noah Brooks were secretly dating. Every time they walked through the hallway together, someone smiled. Someone whispered. Or someone nudged their friend and pointed. Rory buried her face in her locker. "I can't believe this." Noah leaned against the locker beside hers. "It's not that bad." She slowly turned toward him. "Someone left a heart-shaped sticky note on my locker." He blinked. "They did?" She peeled it off and held it up. Across the front, written in glittery pink ink, were the words: Just kiss already. Noah burst into laughter. "Don't laugh!" "I'm trying not to." "You are laughing." "I know." Rory folded the note into a tiny square before stuffing it into her pocket. "I'm blaming you." "What did I do?" "You exist." "That's a serious crime." "It is today." During lunch, Emma joined them with the biggest grin either of them had ever seen. "I have wonderful news." "I don't trust that smile," Rory muttered. "The Autumn Charity Gala committee just announced something." "What?" Emma dramatically pulled a flyer from her bag. Senior Dance Tradition Every senior must participate in the opening dance. Students who don't already have a partner... ...will be paired randomly. Noah looked up from the flyer. "So... everyone has to dance?" Emma nodded excitedly. "Everyone." Rory nearly dropped her sandwich. "I don't dance." "You'll learn." "I have two left feet." "So does Noah." "Hey!" Noah protested. Emma ignored him. "The gala is in three weeks." "That gives us plenty of time." Rory sighed. "To embarrass ourselves." After classes ended, the student council gathered all the seniors in the auditorium. Music filled the room as Mrs. Harrison, the dance instructor, stepped onto the stage. "Good afternoon, everyone." A chorus of sleepy greetings answered her. "I know many of you think dancing is terrifying." Several students nodded immediately. "But don't worry." She smiled. "It's only a simple waltz." Someone groaned loudly. Mrs. Harrison laughed. "We'll begin by choosing partners." Rory quietly whispered to Emma. "If we're randomly paired..." Emma smirked. "I have a feeling fate won't need any help." Mrs. Harrison began reading names. "Liam and Ava." "Daniel and Sophie." "Emma Collins and Ethan Walker." Emma shrugged. "Not bad." Then— "Rory Hart..." She held her breath. "...and Noah Brooks." The room erupted into whistles. Someone clapped. Another student shouted, "Finally!" Rory wanted the floor to open and swallow her whole. Mrs. Harrison frowned at the class. "Enough." But even she smiled knowingly. Noah walked over to Rory. "I guess we're dancing." She sighed dramatically. "I guess we are." The music started. Mrs. Harrison demonstrated the basic steps. "One... two... three." "One... two... three." Then she clapped her hands. "Partners, please." Noah held out one hand. "My lady." Rory couldn't help laughing. "You've been waiting your whole life to say that." "Maybe." She placed her hand in his. His other hand rested carefully against her waist. Her free hand rested on his shoulder. For a moment... Neither of them moved. Mrs. Harrison smiled from across the room. "You actually have to dance." "Oh." "Right." "One..." Rory stepped forward. "So far, so good." "Two..." Noah accidentally stepped on her foot. "Ow!" "I'm sorry!" "You owe me new shoes." "They're sneakers." "Expensive sneakers." "They were twenty dollars." "They're emotionally expensive." He laughed. "Try again?" She smiled. "Try again." The second attempt went much better. Slowly, they found the rhythm. One. Two. Three. One. Two. Three. "You know," Noah said quietly. "We've never danced before." Rory smiled. "I guess not." "You've improved." "So have you." "I only stepped on your foot once." "That's progress." She laughed. The sound made Noah smile without even realizing it. Across the room, Emma watched them dancing. Beside her stood Lily Carter. "They look comfortable together," Lily observed. Emma nodded. "They've been best friends since they were five." Lily smiled softly. "You can tell." "What do you mean?" "They don't have to think." "They just..." She searched for the words. "...fit." Emma looked toward Rory and Noah. She couldn't disagree. The music changed to a slower melody. Students relaxed as they became more confident. Without noticing... Rory and Noah drifted away from the other couples. The chatter around them faded. For a brief moment... It felt as though they were the only two people in the room. Rory looked up. Their eyes met. No teasing. No jokes. Just silence. A warm, comfortable silence. Then— "You missed a step." Noah blinked. "I did?" "You definitely did." "I was distracted." "By what?" He smiled. "You." Rory's cheeks instantly turned pink. Before she could reply, Mrs. Harrison clapped her hands. "Excellent work, everyone!" The spell was broken. Students applauded. Conversations filled the auditorium once more. As they packed up to leave, Coach Reynolds called Noah over. "Brooks, a word." "I'll catch up," Noah told Rory. She nodded. "I'll wait outside." Standing near the entrance, Rory watched autumn leaves drift across the school courtyard. A few moments later, Lily walked out of the auditorium too. She smiled politely. "Hi, Rory." "Hi." "You and Noah dance really well together." Rory laughed awkwardly. "We almost fell over." Lily smiled. "Maybe." "But it looked natural." She hesitated before continuing. "You're lucky." "Lucky?" "To have someone who's known you your whole life." Rory looked back toward the auditorium doors. "I guess I am." She hadn't thought about it that way before. Noah wasn't just her best friend. He was the person who had witnessed every version of her. The shy little girl who threw a rubber ball at his head. The child who buried a time capsule beneath an oak tree. The teenager chasing dreams through a camera lens. He had been there through all of it. And somehow... He was still standing beside her. That evening, Rory sat on the swing in her backyard while the giant teddy bear Noah had won for her at the Autumn Festival rested beside her. The cool breeze carried the scent of fallen leaves. She smiled as she remembered dancing with him. She remembered the way he'd held her waist. The way he'd smiled. The way her heart had skipped a beat when he'd said he was distracted by her. She pressed a hand gently against her chest. "What is happening to me?" Across the fence, Noah stepped outside with his basketball. He looked up and saw her. Without saying a word, he smiled and waved. Rory smiled back. For the first time... The rumors didn't seem quite so ridiculous. Maybe everyone else wasn't imagining something. Maybe... Two hearts were slowly changing without even realizing it. And beneath the old oak tree, the time capsule waited quietly. Its secrets were getting closer to being uncovered.
