queen's strike-back

890 Words
The heavy scent of crushed white lilies and fresh blood always lingered in the grand hall of the Obsidian Kingdom whenever the king decided to rewrite the laws. For three long years, Queen Elena had sat silently upon her ivory throne, a gilded cage designed by her own husband, King Silas. She had played the part of the quiet, obedient queen perfectly, keeping her head low while Silas built his empire on the backs of the weak. To the court, she was nothing more than an ornament—a fragile piece of glass that would shatter if pushed too hard. But tonight, under the harsh glare of the midnight sun, the game was changing. Silas stood at the head of the long mahogany table, his obsidian armor catching the flickering torchlight. His eyes, cold and dark as a winter night, scanned the room of bowing ministers before landing on Elena. He radiated the supreme arrogance of a man who believed he had conquered everything, including the woman who shared his bed and his title. "The eastern borders have fallen to the rebel factions," Silas announced, his deep voice echoing off the stone walls. "And to secure our alliance with the Northern Reach, I have decided to take a new consort. A warrior princess who can actually command an army, rather than look pretty in silk." A quiet murmur rippled through the court. The ministers lowered their eyes, some out of pity, others out of malice. They looked at Elena, waiting for the tears, the sudden outrage, or the desperate pleas of a discarded wife. Instead, Elena simply smiled. The small, sharp curl of her lips caught Silas off guard. Elena stood up, her long crimson gown trailing behind her like a river of fire. The fabric rustled against the stone, a sound that suddenly felt loud in the suffocating silence of the hall. "An alliance built on a replacement is a fragile thing, Silas," Elena said, her voice smooth, steady, and entirely devoid of the fear he expected. She began to walk down the steps of the dais, the heels of her leather boots clicking sharply against the marble floors. Silas frowned, his jaw tightening as his hand instinctively rested on the jewel-encrusted hilt of his sword. "You forget your place, Elena. You are a queen in name only. You have no army. You have no power." "That is where you are wrong," Elena replied, stopping just a few feet from him, her posture unyielding. "While you were busy fighting mindless wars on the borders, I was here. Tending to the kingdom. Listening to the people you starved, and healing the wounds you left behind. I won the loyalty of the guards you mistreated while you treated this palace like a military barracks." With a sudden, deliberate movement, Elena lifted her right hand high into the air. Instantly, the heavy oak doors of the grand hall burst open with a deafening crash. A squad of elite royal guards marched into the room in flawless formation. Silas stared in horror as he realized their armor had been stripped of his personal crest; in its place was a gleaming silver crescent—Elena’s personal emblem. Before Silas could bark an order, the ministers at the long table stood up in unison. Slipping their hands into their heavy robes, they drew hidden daggers and pointed them directly at Silas's few remaining loyal commanders. The trap had closed, perfectly and silently, right under the king's nose. Silas choked back a gasp, stepping back as the spears of his own guards surrounded him, their iron tips lowered directly at his throat. "This is treason!" Silas roared, his face contorting with rage and the sudden, icy shock of realization. "No, Silas," Elena said softly, stepping up to the head of the mahogany table. She reached down and picked up the heavy golden crown he had left resting there. With a slow, deliberate grace, she placed it firmly onto her own head, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, absolute authority. "This is a strike-back. Your reign is over." Silas glared at her, his breathing ragged as the guards forced him to his knees. "The northern armies will never accept you," he spat, his voice trembling with venom. "They answer to blood and steel, not to a queen who hid in the library." "The northern armies have already been bought, Silas," Elena murmured, leaning down so only he could hear her. "With the very gold you thought you spent on provisions. You see, an empire built on fear falls the moment someone offers a better alternative. And I am a much better alternative." Elena turned away from her broken husband, her crimson gown swirling around her ankles as she looked out over the assembly of lords, ministers, and soldiers. For three years she had been a ghost in her own palace. Tonight, she was the only force that mattered. "Clear the hall," Queen Elena commanded, her voice ringing out like a war bell. "Take the former king to the obsidian dungeons. Tomorrow, we rewrite the laws of the kingdom." The guards moved instantly, dragging a cursing Silas out into the shadows. As the doors closed behind them, Elena took her seat at the head of the table. The strike-back was complete, and her true rule had just begun.
