A Sign

Who was that girl? Leland ponders. Is she really okay?             The night previous had only been his first spent in Portfield and just his second in Oregon State. He wasn’t ready to be caught off guard so soon – he hadn’t even worn off his morning brain fog.             It’s too early for this.             He glimpses the little paper cup sitting solemnly on the table. Sighing, he reaches for it and feels the beverage’s warmth through the sides. He tastes the tea. Still steaming, it scalds his tongue and the distinct flavor warms him. Sighing, he leans back in his chair.             I really should pay more attention to things… For all I know, she could have handed me a cup of worms and I wouldn’t have noticed. Tch.             He rubs his tired eyes. Was it a coincidence?             The memory of the sudden meeting with the tall, kind – and clumsy – stranger plays in his mind. When she appeared, he was far too caught up in his own thoughts to give attention to his surroundings. He’d been deep inside his mind.             God if you’re out there, he was praying, send me a sign or something.             Then she appeared. Out of the clouds and rain, she smiled with the sun. And the gold sunflower necklace sparkled as it hung in the light.             A sunflower, he thinks. He looks to the sun, still shining through the clouds.              God, what are you playing at?
