2:Let’s get a divorce.

Let’s get a divorce. Dorian King had sent that text message precisely twenty three hours and thirty minutes ago. He knew because he was on his phone all day after sending the message, waiting for a reply to it. None came. Not even a single letter or word but he knew she read it and it was what made him moody the entire day, so much that his employees had to bear the brunt of his frustration and anger. Dorian King had just two moods; the bad mood and the extremely bad mood. His employees at the company that day experienced the latter; the extremely bad mood, and it had everyone on edge, wondering what the hell was up the butt of their CEO again that day. He had lost his cool at two meetings, suspended two sales managers and blatantly criticized the presentations for the new business ideas by two of his employees who probably ended up crying in the restroom after being utterly chewed by Dorian. Dorian King wasn’t just a popular name, he was a phenomenon in the business world and has even managed to snag the spotlight on entertainment news most of the time because of his good looks. He was known to be domineering, inflexible and incapable. Despite his seemingly bad reputation , Dorian was able to build something that was close to an empire. Something his generations to come would enjoy and praise him for whenever his name is mentioned. As the CEO of the King Automobiles, a Car production company, he had everything he needed at the tip of his fingers and he was able to get whatever it was he wanted. Just like three years ago, when he got himself a wife. Although, it was mainly because his filial obligations to his family required him to get one. Either way, he got married three years ago and solidified his stance as the true heir of the King family. Just like all other arranged marriages in their century, his marriage to the woman was a largely elaborate business deal, one that favoured both sides and strengthened the businesses of both families. With Mia Moore, the only daughter of the Moore family that he has known since he was a kid; playing with white sand and looking for seashells; it was never about love. Mia has always been the quiet type, the gentle and obedient daughter of her parents who willingly accepted to marry him three years ago despite knowing that he didn’t love her. And so, considering Mia’s quiet nature, Dorian thought it shouldn’t surprise him that she failed to reply to his text messages. But still it did shake him up and had him confused. Mia might be calm, surely but how could she stay calm when she got a message like that? He had blatantly told her to come home and that they should get divorced. Dorian had thought about it all day and unconsciously looked forward to going home to meet her and see what her true reaction was to his message, asking for a divorce. As he drove home that day, he tried to think about the last time he saw her and how she looked. Would she look any different than she did three years ago? Would his feelings towards her be different than they were three years ago and long before that? He got his answer. She was right there a few feet away from him, in the room that was meant to be their matrimonial room but which they only shared once because he sent her abroad under the guise of studying because he couldn’t deal with being married to her and being in love with someone else. Mia really did look different than she did, three years ago. She had grown her short hair out, its black straight lushness falling in a long mass on her back. Mia used to have a bang, one that made her look cheeky and young. The bang was still there but it didn’t make Mia look cheeky, it fell in well appropriated curls in front of her head. Her cheekbones were higher and rosier, in contrast to her pale olive skin. He couldn’t see through the floral summer dress she wore but he could tell how her body had filled up in the right places. The only thing that seemed to be the same about Mia was her confidence. Confidence still oozed out of her pores and even though she seemed a bit flustered by his sudden appearance by the bedroom door, she still managed to keep her head high. One thing hadn’t changed about him though–his feelings towards her. They still remained the same, plain and brusque just as before. The change in her body didn’t change what he felt towards her. Nothing. He had felt nothing then. And he still felt nothing, now. He watched as she got a grip of herself and took a step forward, smoothing her dress with her hands. “Hi.” came her soft voice. Dorian stepped forward. “Did you get my message?” He went straight to the point. He could have at least been a gentleman at the last minute and ask her how her journey was or how she survived studying all alone abroad and other shits like that but this was what had bothered him all day. He could as well ask for an answer first. Mia’s amber eyes lost their color for a few seconds. He could tell she was disappointed. Anyone would be, she’d been away from home for years and then she meets her husband and the first thing he asks her is about a message he sent to her requesting a divorce. Mia had every right to whatever feelings she felt at that moment. “Yes.” She finally replied. Dorian's face twisted into a frown, he didn’t care what she felt. She had ignored him intentionally. “And you didn’t think to reply?” He probed further. “I thought it would be better to talk about it upon my return.” Dorian stepped further into the room and closed the door. He didn’t want Talia, the maid, listening to their conversation. “Is there anything to talk about though? We both knew this was coming.” ‘You left me agitated for nothing’ was really what he wanted to say but he didn’t. He couldn’t believe he had worried that she didn’t want a divorce and that's why she didn’t reply to his message. “Have you told the parents about it?” She asked out of the blue. He saw it coming, the question and he already prepared for it. “They’d know after it's been finalized.” The Moore and King family would probably go insane once they learn the news but it would only be a matter of time before everyone moves on. Even his business would probably suffer a backlash and his stocks would go down but he had strategies put in place to get them back up. His plan was perfect. The only hitch in his perfect plan was Mia herself. She nodded at his words. He didn’t know what it meant. Nod, that the family shouldn’t find out until later or nod that she was willing to sign the divorce papers? “Is it because of her?” When She asked, Mia was looking at his bedside drawer. Dorian instantly knew that she must have gone through it and saw the contents of the drawer. As much as he hated someone going through his things,it didn’t annoy him. Her. Dorian knew who Mia was referring to. There could only be one her between them and of course, she was the reason why he was divorcing his wife. “Is she okay?” Mia asked again when Dorian didn’t say anything. Dorian’s eyes shot up. The look he caught in Mia’s eyes said it all. “You knew?” Mia shrugged. “She’s a celebrity. Everyone knows.” Mia stated the obvious and then paused for a second as if rethinking something else before she continued, “Besides, I’ve known her since she were kids. I just thought…I thought she had gotten better since then.” Dorian didn’t say a word. He didn’t want his mind to travel to the years Mia was probably reminiscing as well. Standing there, he thought it was better that she knew beforehand. It would save them both the trouble. “It’s her dying wish, Mia.” He tried to sound reasonable. He tried to make himself sound reasonable to his own ears. “That we get divorced?” Mia asked incredulously. Was that anger he sensed in her voice? Was he wrong to think she would readily accept to get a divorce because of his estranged and sick lover? “No, that I get married to her.” Dorian bit out bluntly and he didn’t stop there. “It has always been her wish but I had to put my family and business first if I wanted the favour of my family. It doesn’t matter anymore now. I’ve hurt her and the least I could do now is fulfil her dying wish.” The room fell into silence after that. Dorian didn’t expect her to say anything and he didn’t even want to hear anything from her. “We were never even married in the true sense anyway.” He just had to add that. Mia tilted her head and thinned her lips. “Maybe because you sent me abroad the next day because you needed a wife who was every bit as educated as you and can stand in important gatherings.” Mia quoted his words just right. It was exactly what he said three years ago but it was just him trying to get rid of her. And when she knew that, Mia still did as he told her. She left for France to study. “It was never going to work out anyway. Staying away from each other was our best shot at keeping the marriage.” Mia didn’t say anything after the response from Dorian and Dorian seemed to be short of words after that too. It was clear, there was nothing else to say in that moment. It was their cue to give it up. Mia was finally able to move her feet in his direction and then stopped beside him on her way out. Her flowery scent infiltrated his nostrils as she did. “I’ll go set the table with Talia. You can come back for dinner. I’m guessing we have only a few days to pretend we are still a couple.” She whispered and began to walk away but Dorian stopped her with his words too. “I found your things in the guest room. You should move them here if we’re going to keep up the pretense.” Dorian didn’t wait for her to say anything after that, he walked further into the room while he listened for her own receding footsteps away from the room till it died down. He stared hard at his bed. The one he would share with Mia tonight; the one he would share with her for days to come. Just how long would that be?
