Dorian's eyes fell on her wet body, not because he wanted them to but because she was right there in front of him, looking helpless and red with embarrassment and there was no other place to look other than in front of him.
From where he stood, he saw how the fluorescent lights of the bathroom fell on her wet body and illuminated goosebumps that decorated her skin like art. It was hard to tell if the goosebumps were from the cold water or her embarrassment at standing in front of him like a wet puppy.
Somehow, her wet body didn't faze him.
If anything, he was only reminded of all the reasons why he never liked Mia as they grew up together. Mia wasn't exactly clumsy or rough but didn't have the grace of a swan, neither did she have the elegance of a queen.
While growing up and being forced to play with her as kids, she never did anything extraordinary. She was the type of girl who didn't know what she wanted to be in the future, the type of girl who didn't have talents or hobbies. It was crazy to even know that someone like her existed.
And so,to Dorian, there was nothing special about her.
She was just her…plain and simple Mia. Average
and bland Mia.
All the more reason why staring at her in wet clothes that revealed too much of her feminine body as well as hardened n*****s on two round mounds of breast, didn't move Dorian one bit.
His eyes were the same–souless in a way that was designated only for her.
After what felt like minutes between the both of them, Dorian finally tore his eyes off her her wet frame and reached for one of the towels that hung on the wall.
He stepped towards her in fast long strides and handed the towel over to her. She hesitated as if looking for a flicker of emotion that was different from the ones he has ever showed her and it seemed like her shoulders sagged when she didn't find it there.
Mia took the towel from him and turned away. Dorian stepped back, putting his hands into his pockets and looking around to the mess Mia caused on the bathroom floor. He held back a sigh.
"I'll run the bath. You can leave."
She only nodded, wrapping the towel around herself and sticking a foot out of the bathtub. She almost slipped when she attempted to move her other feet but Dorian steadied her with his hands against his discretion.
"Thank you." She whispered and turned to leave.
Dorian watched her as she took careful steps out of the bathroom before he turned back to the tub, emptied the rest of the water in it and then turned the tap on, letting the water gush loudly into the tub.
******
Mia only took her time walking out of the bathroom to avoid more embarrassments than she had already successfully garnered to herself.
The moment she shut the door of the bathroom, she ran for the room like her pants were on fire. The least thing her body felt was heat because she was covered in wet clothes but deep inside of her, where clothes couldn't reach, she was hot.
Mia buried her head into the bed and screamed into it, the sound muffled by both the water running in the bathroom and the silky sheets of the bed.
She had never felt the urge to die like she felt right then and if embarrassment could kill, she'd already be six feet under.
How could she have let him see her like that?
She had been determined to be perfect in ways she has never been before. She had been determined to not mess a single thing up so as not to give him the impression that she was still the woman he married three years ago even if they were going to be divorced soon enough.
And she has been partly successful at it. She praised her swiftness at handling the misunderstanding between Dorian and his mother mere moments ago and acting the part of a wife who would do anything for her husband.
Well, so much for impressions and determination.
She had ruined her chance.
The look in Dorian's eyes said it all. The fall was an accident but Mia went way ahead of herself to think that Dorian would lust after her wet body.
She was crazy to even think there was a slight, one percent chance of him being attracted to her. Now she knew, even if she roamed the house naked, Dorian wouldn't spare her a second glance. Even the first glance was her asking for too much.
Realizing embarrassment couldn't kill her as much as she wanted it to, she shed her wet clothes off and took out a nightwear from her closet, changing into it.
The water in the bathroom was still running when she was finally ready to go to bed. Mia wasn't looking forward to sharing the bed with Dorian.
Sleeping beside him even with their backs turned to each other, meant trying to control her breathing, trying not to move too often even if she's restless, fighting sleep because she wasn't sure if she snored and trying not to hog the duvet to herself.
Dorian's phone ringing off the beside drawer startled her out of her thoughts. She was right beside it on the bed and so she caught the name on the screen before she could stop herself from looking.
Irene.
Irene was calling.
Mia wanted to feel offended, it was a feeling she was entitled to after all, she was still married to him. Yet she couldn't even bring herself to having that kind of feeling.
Mia didn't notice when the water in the bathroom stopped running but when the door of the bathroom opened, she looked up from the ringing phone.
It felt like she was caught doing something bad as she bit down on her lips. Carefully, she chose her next words.
"Your phone."
Mia said before shifting to the other end of the bed and covering herself. From the corner of her eyes, she watched Dorian walk towards the bed with hair wet and shiny under the golden lights of the room. He was dressed in the same clothes but this time, the shirt was wet and it strained and emphasized his chiseled body.
Mia turned away before he could catch her watching and covered herself, hoping that she's able to get any sleep that night.
Mia listened for the sound of his voice, waiting for him to answer the call but nothing came. Instead the lights went off and the bed dipped with added weight as he climbed into the bed with her, maintaining his own part of the huge bed.
Mia guessed he didn't answer the phone even if her heart ached to know why. She closed her eyes tightly.
"Grandmother is turning eighty next week."
Dorian said into the silence of the room.
Mia's eyes fluttered open. Of course, Berta would be a year older the coming week. Mia had been so occupied with settling in and talks of divorce that she totally forgot the old woman would get a lot more older soon.
Every year while she was away, Mia didn't fail to send presents and wishes to Berta, Evelyn, Dorian's grandfather and even Dorian himself.
Mia wasn't sure if he got the gifts or even accepted them and she never even got a reply to messages wishing him a happy birthday.
He didn't wait for her to respond.
"She's having a party to celebrate and we have to be there." He paused before he said the next word, "Together."
Dorian didn't have to say it, Mia knew it goes without saying that she had to be there. Dorian obviously has a reason for telling her.
"She wants me to get you a dress for the party."
That was the reason.
Berta and Evelyn had probably scolded him when he saw them off earlier.
"It's fine, I could pick something up at the store with Judith tomorrow." Mia said.
"Don't make this any harder for the both of us. They have eyes everywhere and will not stop talking about it for days if I don't do what they want."
Dorian said. Mia could hear the annoyance in his voice as he spoke about his family.
"We will visit the store together, before the party."
His voice left no room for arguments and honestly? Mia didn't have the energy to argue or disagree.
She just wanted the next day to come soon. She dreaded what the next day would bring but not as much as she dreaded the thoughts of going to that party with her husband and having to pretend like they were the couple of the season.
There was really nothing to look forward to at the party.
Just when she thought it was over, she heard Dorian speak again.
"The papers have been finalized."
Mia wanted to be savage and ask what papers but she was too numb to talk back at him in a manner that would probably set him off.
She was too dumbfounded to say anything. The divorce papers were ready already? She had dreaded the day she would hear this and even see the papers. Heck, the sound of them was ominous and acutely terrifying and she wasn't prepared yet it hit her with no warning.
Mia said nothing. She knew Dorian wasn't the kind of man who needed to hear opinions before he made his point known. He knew she was listening. Her response didn't matter to him one bit.
"My lawyer will contact you tomorrow. All you have to do is sign. You can go ahead and ask for anything. The lawyer will relay your message to me."
He made it sound like it was a business deal of some sort. One she had no control over because she was at a disadvantage.
"You can quietly move out after the party to avoid attention. I'll take care of the family."
Sure he would.
All she probably had to do was sit and say nothing while he makes up s**t to both their families
That was the wife he married years ago. Quiet, plaim Mia.
Mia couldn't help but think that even after three years, she was still the same woman. Going abroad to study didn't seem to have changed that one thing about her.
And maybe Dorian noticed.
If he did, then she has really lost her chance to prove herself to him.
She had lost him.
