Chapter 4: The Invitation

1076 Words
The morning sunlight drifted quietly into the room through the open curtain. “My Lady, you need to wake up. It is already past breakfast time,” the head maid said softly to Catherine, who lay motionless on the bed. Although her eyes were wide open, Catherine did not feel like getting up, let alone eating. She looked utterly drained. The rumor spreading through the pack—that Kyla was going to marry Alpha Silas—had sapped all the strength from her body. “I don’t want to eat,” Catherine said weakly. She had completely lost the will to care ever since Lucky confirmed the rumor, that Alpha Silas was truly going to marry Kyla. Her eyes blurred with tears as the head maid tried to comfort her. “My Lady, do not punish yourself like this. Please, you need to live on and live well. Al—” She abruptly stopped herself. Mentioning the Alpha’s name had once worked like magic. Whenever Catherine was in a foul mood and refused to eat, speaking of him would always rouse her. But now, his name had become forbidden, and the head maid did not dare continue. “Life is meaningless,” Catherine replied carelessly, her eyes empty of all spirit. Just then, the door opened, and Kyla stepped into the room. The moment she saw the head maid, she ordered, “Leave us.” The head maid bowed and quietly walked out. Kyla turned her gaze to Catherine, who was curled up weakly on the bed, and looked down at her with disdain. Then she sneered, “Are you trying to go on a hunger strike to force Alpha Silas to change his mind? You are too naive. Even if you jumped to your death, the decision has already been made. Nothing will change.” Catherine said nothing. She knew there was no point speaking. Her words carried no weight, and she would never win against Kyla in an argument. She simply pressed her lips together. But Kyla was not finished. She sneered again. “I think you should leave the pack already. Staying here will do you no good. Go and look for your real family. It has been years since you left, and they never came searching for you. Why not go and search for them yourself?” Catherine had not intended to respond, but Kyla had touched her bottom line. She let out a cold snort and said, “Keep dreaming. I will never leave my husband or the pack for you. You may have succeeded in marrying my husband, but you will never have his heart. His heart belongs to me.” Kyla’s face darkened because she knew Catherine was telling the truth. Even though she could see Alpha Silas whenever she wished, she had never truly been able to get close to him. He barely spoke to her and had never allowed her to share his bed. No matter how hard she tried, she could not win what she wanted from him. Her expression soured, but then a smirk slowly appeared on her lips. Raising a hand, she gently caressed her stomach. With a meaningful smile, she sneered, “You can have his heart, but I have his child. Let’s see whether your love is more important than his heir.” Catherine’s face instantly turned ashen. Satisfied with the blow she had dealt, Kyla turned and walked out of the room. Catherine cried herself to sleep. When she woke, she weakly dragged herself out of bed, her body trembling with every step. She desperately wanted to see Alpha Silas. Her heart was heavy with pain, and she longed to pour it all out to the man she loved so dearly. When she reached his door, only Lucky stood outside. Lucky lowered his head and said in a low but firm voice, “My Lady, the Alpha is in an important discussion and has no time to see you for now. You should return tomorrow.” A hopeless smile touched Catherine’s lips. She understood the meaning behind his words—they were sending her away. Silas still refused to see her. Her eyelids lowered as tears slipped down her cheeks. “Tell him… I won’t give up on us,” Catherine said softly, her voice full of heartbreak. Then she turned and walked away. Lucky watched her retreating figure with sympathy in his eyes before returning to the room. When he stepped back inside and saw Alpha Silas sitting there with a solemn expression, Lucky immediately knew that Catherine’s words at the door had reached him. Others might not see the pain the Alpha was hiding, but Lucky could. He had been by Silas’s side since childhood. After a moment, Lucky spoke. “About the wedding invitation from the Wilson family to the Luna… are you really going to let her attend?” Alpha Silas fell silent for a brief moment before replying, “Do not interfere.” Lucky stiffened. Worry filled his face as he said, “They are planning to ruin her reputation and harm her. Are you really going to allow it? If she goes, she will be publicly humiliated.” The muscles in Alpha Silas’s jaw tightened, but his voice remained indifferent. “They know their limits,” he said coldly. “As long as she stays alive.” Lucky could not understand it. The more he thought about it, the more confused he became. He knew better than anyone that Alpha Silas loved Catherine deeply, so why was he allowing the woman he loved to be bullied like this? “Why?” Lucky finally asked. Alpha Silas looked at him and answered calmly, “She is of low birth. Do not think too much about it. You may leave—I want to be alone.” Lucky lowered his head, then turned and left. Later, the invitation card was delivered to Catherine. When she saw it, she looked up at the head maid and asked weakly, “Can I refuse to go?” The head maid sighed before answering, “My Lady, you are the Luna of the pack. Your blessing is required for the marriage. You cannot simply refuse. You must fulfill your duty.” Catherine let out a bitter laugh. Duty? Of course not. The real reason they had invited her so publicly could only be one thing— They wanted to destroy her.
