Catherine’s eyes lost all their light as she stared ahead, blank and hollow.
Kyla looked at her with pride before speaking slowly. “You didn’t expect this, did you? You were always talking about him, always bragging about the love you shared. So where is that love now? He doesn’t care about you anymore. He is my husband now.”
Catherine looked at the woman she had grown up with—the one she had trusted with her heart, the one she had shared all her secrets with. She had never seen Kyla as just a friend, but as a bosom friend.
The betrayal cut so deeply into her heart that she could barely breathe. Tears shimmered in her eyes as she whispered in disbelief, “Why? I never expected this from you, Kyla. I loved you so much, and yet you did this to me. Why?”
Kyla smiled coldly and sneered. “Because I was jealous of you. You grew up sheltered. Madam Warren gave you the best things in life. You never knew suffering. You lived in luxury, and when you came of age, you still didn’t transform, yet you were still fated to the Alpha. Who the hell are you to deserve all the good things in life?”
At that moment, the last bit of hope Catherine had for their friendship vanished. She looked at Kyla weakly, having completely given up on any chance of saving what they once had. Tears glistened in her eyes.
Kyla sneered again. “You should leave the pack. Staying in this prison won’t change his mind. It has been weeks now, Catherine, and we’re already married. There is no room for you in his heart anymore.”
When she was done speaking, Kyla rose to her feet and headed for the door.
Catherine watched her retreating figure with cold eyes before suddenly yelling, almost crazed, “I will never give up on my husband! I will fight for our love. Neither you nor anyone else will make me leave the pack. I will remain here. I know that one day he will realize the worth of our love!”
Kyla did not turn back. She simply kept walking until she disappeared from Catherine’s sight.
Catherine panted heavily, tears burning in her eyes. The pain in her heart was so intense that she could barely breathe.
After a while, she shut her eyes and collapsed weakly onto the floor as tears rolled down her cheeks.
The guard on duty saw her and snorted in contempt before cursing at her. “Petty thief. Keep dreaming about getting back with the Alpha. Go look in a mirror and see if you’re even worthy of such an honor.”
Catherine did not respond.
When news of Kyla’s visit to the pack dungeon reached Alpha Silas, his face darkened. He already knew Kyla would not have gone there unless it was to provoke Catherine.
He was furious, but then his eyes flickered with realization as the bedroom door opened.
His gaze turned icy.
He turned and saw Kyla stepping inside. Looking at her with detached indifference, he asked, “Why are you here? I didn’t call for you.”
Kyla’s expression stiffened. She had never expected that the man she now called her husband would neither touch her on their wedding night nor allow her to sleep beside him since their marriage.
“My husband,” she began softly, “we are already married. I don’t like the idea of us sleeping in separate bedrooms. I want to feel the arms of my—"
Alpha Silas interrupted her coolly. “I don’t wish to listen to your nonsense. You should use the door.”
Kyla’s eyes widened in shock. She had never expected Alpha Silas to send her away so rudely. She took a deep breath, gnashed her teeth, and began to say, word by word, “We are m—”
Alpha Silas did not wait for her to finish before cutting in coldly. “I am aware. If we were not married, I would have asked Lucky to throw you out.”
Kyla’s eyes glistened with tears. Lowering her head pitifully, she said in a hoarse voice, “I will leave as you have said, but I hope you can treat our unborn child well. He has done nothing against you, and he does not deserve to be unloved by his father.”
Alpha Silas remained expressionless. Slowly, he turned around, clasped his hands behind his back, and stared out the window in silence.
When Kyla realized she was not getting the reaction she wanted, she clenched her fists in anger and reluctantly walked out the door.
After she left, Lucky entered and reported the conversation Kyla had with Catherine. Alpha Silas swayed slightly.
“My Lord!” Lucky panicked and rushed to his side, leaving an afterimage.
Alpha Silas smiled bitterly. He was such a coward, not even comparable to the woman he loved. She had been willing to suffer and endure everything just to prove her love for him, yet he had abandoned her the moment he was faced with overwhelming temptation.
He sat on the bed and asked solemnly, “Lucky, am I a coward?”
Lucky’s expression changed drastically. He had served by the Alpha’s side for years, and this was the first time he had heard him speak so lowly of himself. Lucky quickly comforted him. “You are not a coward, My Lord. You are a ruler who understands what must be done, one who knows how to sacrifice for the greater good. In the future, she will realize you did it for her safety. She will not hate you for your decision.”
Alpha Silas let out a bitter laugh and said mournfully, “I hope she will. I really hope she will.”
He clutched the bedsheet, roughening the neatly made bed, his brows furrowed in frustration. After some time, he exhaled.
Then he said to Lucky, “I want to be alone.”
Although Lucky was reluctant to leave, he still turned and headed for the door. When he reached it, he paused briefly and said, “I have already found out about the arrangement the pack elders are making.”
