Alpha Silas turned to her with a cold sneer. “This has nothing to do with you. You have no right to meddle in my private affairs.”
Kyla remained unnervingly calm. By now, she had already accepted that she would never win his heart. Still, even if she could not have his love, sharing his bed with him just once had been enough to fulfill the fantasy she had long cherished.
Slowly, she stepped closer to him, biting her lower lip in a seductive manner. When she was close enough, she leaned in and whispered softly, “Why don’t we try again? The last time, you were too drunk to remember how it felt to be inside me. I’ve missed your touch…”
As she lifted a hand to tug at his collar, she added in a hushed voice, “I want to scream your name.”
Alpha Silas caught her wrist and glared at her with icy disdain before replying, “The first time was a mistake, and it will also be the last. It will never happen again. Now, get out.”
Kyla’s expression changed instantly. Her eyes widened in shock and disbelief as she let out a bitter laugh. “Are you really throwing me out?”
Alpha Silas did not bother to soften his tone. He merely snorted coldly. “Get out.”
Being dismissed so bluntly—twice—struck a nerve. Kyla’s face twisted with anger as she snapped, “Fine. I’m leaving.”
She spun on her heel and stormed out of his room. She did not remain at the palace; instead, she went straight home. When she arrived, the mansion servants greeted her respectfully, but she ignored them all, her expression dark and stormy.
Just as she reached the staircase, a mocking voice stopped her.
“My dear sister, it seems things did not go as you planned. Betraying your childhood friend and throwing yourself cheaply into his bed still did not earn you the favor you so desperately wanted. What a pity.”
Kyla’s face darkened even further. She let out a scornful snort. “Gideon, don’t spew nonsense at me. At least I’m not a coward like you. You loved Catherine so much, yet you never even had the courage to confess your feelings. You stood by helplessly and watched her marry another man. If cowardice were given human form, it would be you.”
The siblings stared at each other coldly.
Gideon clenched his jaw, fury flashing in his sinister gaze. This was a part of his past he hated being reminded of. He had harbored deep feelings for Catherine ever since they were children. In fact, it was because of those feelings that he had encouraged Kyla to befriend her. Yet no matter how much he cared for Catherine, he had always believed he was unworthy of her. So, instead of confessing, he left everything to fate, hoping the Moon Goddess would reward his years of devotion and longing by making Catherine his mate.
But that hope had amounted to nothing more than a foolish dream.
Catherine had been mated to Alpha Silas.
Gideon gritted his teeth and spat at his sister, “Shameless slut.”
“That’s enough, both of you,” an authoritative voice rang out.
A burly man stepped forward, his eyes narrowed, his hands clasped behind his back. The pristine robe draped over his broad frame bore a large moon symbol on the chest, and every step he took radiated confidence and the weight of years spent in command.
Both of them immediately dropped to their knees.
“Father!”
The man’s gaze swept over them before settling on his son. In a deep, commanding voice, he said, “It has been years already. You should have rid yourself of whatever feelings you still have for that girl. The two of you can never be together. Stop avoiding the bonding ceremony. You will attend it this time.”
Gideon did not dare defy him. He quickly lowered his head and replied, “I will obey, Father.”
His father nodded in satisfaction, then dismissed him with a wave. “You may leave.”
Gideon rose to his feet and shot his sister a resentful glance before walking out of the room.
Left alone with his daughter, Kyla’s father turned to her and said, “You have done well, my daughter. I never expected you would accomplish this.”
Kyla stiffened and looked up at him, her face tight with worry. “Dad, you promised you would set him free if I carried out your instructions.”
Her father’s expression darkened. He gave a cold snort. “That little bastard dared to try to steal you from under my nose. He was even planning to sneak you out of the pack. If I hadn’t captured him, he would have taken you away. Killing him wouldn’t be eno—”
Kyla immediately bowed lower and pleaded anxiously, “Have mercy, Father.”
Her father stared at her, his eyes devoid of warmth, his lips pressed into a hard line.
She continued desperately, “You can send him away from the pack, but please don’t kill him, Father.”
He remained silent for a full minute before finally saying, with clear reluctance, “Very well. I will spare his life for your sake. But you must become the pack’s Luna. That is the only reason I will keep him alive.”
“Thank you for your grace, Father,” Kyla replied.
“You may rise,” he said.
Then he turned and walked away.
Kyla slowly got to her feet, her fists clenched tightly, her eyes burning with determination.
“I can’t let Daniel die. Even if it means betraying the whole world, I won’t let the man I love die. I’m sorry, Catherine.”
Catherine was unaware of Kyla’s thoughts. She had never recovered from Kyla’s betrayal or from Alpha Silas’s absence. Every day, she cried herself to sleep, and no matter how hard she tried to seek an audience with her husband, she was always turned away.
Then, at last, the day of the bonding ceremony arrived.
At dusk, the head maid, Augustina, brought Catherine the gown she was to wear for the ceremony.
Once Catherine had dressed, Augustina looked at her with admiration and said, “You are the most beautiful Luna this pack has ever had. Far and wide, everyone praises your beauty.”
But the compliment did not move Catherine. Instead, it deepened the ache in her heart.
“What is the use of being beautiful,” she said bitterly, “when my husband does not even wish to see me?”
Augustina pressed her lips together and lowered her head. She did not dare speak on matters concerning the Alpha. Catherine understood that well, yet she still looked forward to seeing her husband at the bonding ceremony. She had too many questions, and tonight, she intended to get answers.
Enough of the hiding.
This time, he would have nowhere left to run.
