Chapter FourteenLord Lynke stood transfixed, staring at Ventura and the unknown man. He felt as if a sudden darkness encompassed him while his whole world sank into a bottomless pit such as, until this moment, he had never believed. He saw, in the flash of a second, as a drowning man sees his whole life pass before him, that the only thing of any importance in all he had ever attempted or done was his love for Ventura. The love that he felt for her was, indeed, so overpowering that the emotions and passions he had felt in the past sank into their right perspective and he knew the utter anguish and loneliness of a man who has given his whole heart to a woman only to find that she does not want it.
