Chapter SixBy the time Lord Lynke and Ventura arrived in Madrid they were tired of travelling, although the journey had been not too arduous. The inns where they had stayed after that first disastrous night had been better appointed and there had been no difficulty in obtaining a bedroom for Ventura. At first she found it hard to sleep, lying awake hour after hour imagining that each creak on the stairs was an assassin and each flickering shadow a murderer armed with a knife. But the days were long, the roads were rough and soon she found that almost immediately after they had eaten their evening meal she was glad to fall into bed and sleep a dreamless childlike sleep.
