Looking at the shelves, Ventura realised with a little shock that on one side of the room there were small trailers of flowers carved on them. She looked again and, yes, there were roses amongst them! She felt a sudden surging excitement. Could the memory of her father’s story have come to her at this moment as an indication of what she would find? She pressed her fingers on the rose nearest to her and then realised that the flower was not a rose but a marguerite. She moved slowly down the room. Marguerites and all sorts of other flowers were quite discernible, but nothing that looked like a rose. She moved on, searching carefully and then, as she reached almost the centre of the room, she saw that the pattern of the flowers had altered. Now there were roses amongst the carving! With
