Chapter three: reluctant Betrothal 1

1443 Words
"Good morning, Zara," Taylor replied, deftly sidestepping her inquiry. His casual demeanor only served to heighten Zara's unease as she tried to make sense of his unexpected presence in her home. "You know, it would have been more polite to greet our guest before jumping to attack," Diane chided gently, entering the room from the kitchen with a tray of steaming coffee. She placed it on the table next to Taylor, who graciously accepted a cup and took a sip, a satisfied smile playing on his lips. Zara's confusion only deepened as she watched the scene unfold before her. Despite her mother's attempts to normalize the situation, the underlying tension was palpable. The familiarity with which Taylor moved in their home felt like an invasion, and Zara couldn't help but wonder what ulterior motives might be at play. As she struggled to piece together the puzzle, one question continued to dominate her thoughts: Why was Taylor here? Offering a subdued greeting, Zara addressed Taylor with a polite, "Good morning, Mr. Sterling." Her tone belied her underlying apprehension as she moved closer to her mother, seeking solace in her presence. In a hushed voice, she inquired, "What is he doing here, Mum? What does he want?" Diane regarded her daughter with a placating smile, her response laced with an air of mystery. "It's a matter of great importance, dear. Why don't you go and freshen up, so we can discuss everything in detail later?" With a gentle touch, she ushered Zara away, leaving her questions unanswered. Feeling dismissed and desperate for answers, Zara turned to her father, hoping he might offer some insight. However, Jacob remained engrossed in his newspaper, seemingly oblivious to the tension in the room. Left with no other choice, Zara decided to confront Taylor directly. "Mr. Sterling, could we speak privately for a moment?" she asked, her voice tinged with forced politeness. As they made their way to the dining room, Zara wasted no time in addressing her concerns. "What do you want from me? You were following me all night at the club, and now you're here in my home. What's this all about? Taylor regarded her with a placid smile, his composure unwavering. His thoughts drifted back to the moment he had laid eyes on Zara the night before, instantly captivated by her beauty and charm. As luck would have it, he had discovered that she was Zara Lewis, the daughter of John Lewis – owner of Lewis Foods, a company in the same industry as his own. Sensing an opportunity to use their precarious financial situation to his advantage, Taylor saw a chance to claim Zara for himself. "I want to marry you," he declared, adjusting his suit with an air of nonchalance. Taken aback by his bold statement, Zara stared at him incredulously. "What on earth are you talking about? You don't even know me! We only just met yesterday." "You see, Zara, I've been aware of your existence for quite some time," Taylor explained, his tone smooth and persuasive. "And I'm certain that you're the woman I've been searching for." His hand reached out to rest on her shoulder, pulling her closer as he leaned in to press his lips against hers. Shocked and repulsed by his sudden advance, Zara reacted instinctively, slapping Taylor across the face with enough force to echo through the room. The unexpected sound of the slap brought Zara's parents rushing into the dining room, their eyes quickly assessing the scene before them. Immediately sensing the need to salvage the situation, Jacob and Diane began apologizing profusely to Taylor. "She's young and impulsive," they insisted, their words laced with remorse. "We're so sorry for her behavior." Taylor, his composure remarkably unruffled, offered them a gracious smile. "There's no need to apologize. I can understand how overwhelming this must be for her," he said, glancing briefly at Zara before returning his attention to her parents. "I believe it would be best if I took my leave for now. However, I do think we should continue this conversation soon." As he made his way toward the door, Taylor exchanged polite farewells with Jacob and Diane, their tentative plans to meet again hanging in the air. Zara watched in stunned silence, her mind racing to make sense of the bizarre series of events that had just transpired. "Can someone please explain what on earth is going on?" Zara demanded, her voice laced with confusion and frustration. The tension in the room had become almost tangible since her parents' arrival, and she was grateful that her younger brother Jacob was still asleep, blissfully unaware of the unfolding drama. "Young lady, mind your tongue," Diane scolded, her eyes narrowing in disapproval. "Come, Zee," John intervened, ushering his daughter toward the living room. "Let's talk this through." The three of them settled into their seats, with Zara positioned between her parents. Before John could begin, however, Zara cut in, her words tinged with disbelief. "Dad, why are you forcing me to marry a complete stranger? And why are you both being so accommodating to someone who just barges into our home, claiming he wants to marry your daughter, when he's never even met me before?" John took a deep breath, his gaze steady as he prepared to respond. "Zara, Taylor Sterling is the only one who can help us out of this mess – and I don't say that lightly. He offered to connect us with an investor who could save our business and the livelihoods of all the families who depend on us. It's our only viable solution after considering every possible option." Zara's shock was palpable as she processed her father's words. "So, he's agreed to help us, but only if he can marry me first? Is that it?" Diane and John exchanged a knowing glance before nodding in unison. "This arrangement will help us immensely, especially when it comes to Jacob's future," John continued. "It would devastate him if he couldn't attend college this year." Zara's heart sank as she considered her younger brother's dreams and aspirations. What choice did she have? "Mom, Dad... I can't marry that man. He followed me around all night at the club – he's creepy and intrusive." Diane let out a dismissive laugh. "We've known Taylor since he was a child, and he's certainly not a creep. Besides, you said we needed to discuss a potential solution – what ideas do you have to get us out of this predicament?" "Zara, please try to understand," Diane added, her voice soft yet insistent. "We're not just thinking about ourselves here – we're considering what's best for our entire family." She paused, allowing her words to sink in before continuing. "Think about Jacob's future, and how heartbroken he'd be if he couldn't go to college. Wouldn't you do anything to spare him that pain?" John chimed in, his tone earnest and persuasive. "Taylor is a good man, Zara. He's successful, well-respected, and he genuinely wants to help us. He's not some stranger off the street – we've known him for years, and we trust him." Diane nodded in agreement. "Besides, it's not like you have any better options. You said so yourself – you don't have any concrete solutions to our financial problems. This arrangement with Taylor is our only guaranteed way out of this mess." "But why does it have to be me?" Zara asked, her voice trembling with emotion. "Why do I have to sacrifice my freedom and my future for the sake of the family?" "Because that's what families do, Zara," John replied, his gaze unwavering. "We make sacrifices for one another. We support each other when times are tough. And right now, our family needs you." Diane reached out to take Zara's hand, her expression a blend of sympathy and determination. "We know this isn't easy, sweetheart. But we believe it's the right decision – not just for us, but for you as well. You'll be taken care of, and you'll never have to worry about money again. Isn't that what every young woman wants?" As Zara listened to her parents' words, she felt a sense of guilt and obligation weighing heavily on her shoulders. They were right – she didn't have any better ideas, and she couldn't bear the thought of her family suffering. Maybe, just maybe, marrying Taylor was the best option after all. At a loss for words, she finally conceded, "Okay, give me some time to think about it." With a resigned sigh, she excused herself to get dressed, her mind reeling from the weight of the decision that lay before her.
