The first stake went into the dirt on the far side of the garden just after sunrise and the sound of it felt like the start of something real. I stood with Cassian watching Mira and Thorne mark the corners of their future home. Mira wiped her forehead and called over. “Does this line look straight from where you are?” Cassian shaded his eyes. “Move the left stake half a step toward the trees. There. That is better.” Thorne hammered the stake in deeper. “We want the door facing the main house. So the girls can run back and forth without going near the circle.” I nodded. “Good thinking. Keep a clear path. We will help clear the brush after breakfast.” The girls came running with Kai behind them. Nova held a small hammer like it was treasure. “Can I hit a stake? Just once?” Mira smiled.
