Dr. Brown’s suggestion had come out of nowhere. I felt uneasy about spending the night under her care. It would be a huge blow to her reputation if someone were to find out that I had spent the night there. “I’ll be fine,” I said hastily. “I shouldn’t trouble you any further, Dr. Brown. Could you give me a ride to a motel nearby? I’ll get myself a cab tomorrow morning for the ride back to campus.” The fact that we had engaged in s****l relations did not diminish my respect for Dr. Brown. I had forgotten to spare a thought for her feelings as a woman though. In fact, I had forgotten that she was a mature and emotionally complex woman who knew her own feelings, and mind. Dr. Brown was a strong independent woman who was the equal of any man. She had an unyielding, indomitable spirit.
