The Betrayal

Chapter One The Betrayal Tatsumi’s Pov Death is the end, but for me…….it was the beginning. I could still remember how cold it felt and no, I wasn't talking about the cold of winter, but the mind-numbing chill that seeps into your bones when betrayal pierces deep into your heart deeper than a blade or more painful. I lay there, helpless, broken, with my blood flowing down the altar where I was placed as a sacrificial lamb to a goddess whom I had stopped praying to. It was useless. I looked up, with tired eyes as the moon shone brightly above me. It looked back at me, feeling indifferent I had to endure. I turned to the side and my eyes met his. Alpha Storm Thorn, my mate, my Alpha. He stood there as he watched me with icy eyes, feeling unmoved and devoid of any emotions. I turned to see her….Liora. God, the smile she had on her face as she drove the blade deep down my heart will forever haunt me even in my next life (if there’s something like that). I died that night with a scream frozen deep in my throat. I was unheard, unseen, and unloved But for some reason, I didn't stay dead. I opened my eyes, accepting the pain but I came face to face with darkness and quietness, or maybe peace but instead I was greeted with the musty scent of straw and the feel of damp stone beneath me. The sounds of distant howls echoed through my ears. My throat was raw and dry like I hadn't used it in years. I sat upright, gasping, and clawed at my throat like I could tear the silence from it but no sound came, just panic. My hands were trembling as I touched my face, my arms, stomach, and my chest but nothing. There was no blood, no wounds, and the blade marks were gone. I rushed up to the little mirror which was beside me and I was in disbelief. Was I dreaming? Or did I die? Then something caught my attention. There was a huge silver mark on my left shoulder in the shape of the moon which was intertwined with thorns. “What the hell!” I said in a whisper. Just then a vision hit me and everywhere turned all white then I heard a voice. “You have been reborn to fulfill your destiny. I will always be with you. You will be wanted by all, feared by many but trust no one ... not even your own heart.” I snapped back to reality, to the musty room. I stood there shocked out of my mind. I should have screamed but I couldn't. I was alive, reborn and I remembered everything. ****************************************************** It's been two weeks since I woke up, exactly one year before I was killed by my so-called best friend. I had to run away from my hometown, the Bloodfang to the capital city of Astrid, Ashfang pack. I had stayed two weeks in the shadows and silence. I couldn't afford the attention, not yet, not now. As I scrubbed the floor in the marble tile of the palace of the late Alpha king and Luna queen of Astrid. Since their death, with no children or remaining blood, the ruling of the state fell on the high council. I dipped the rag into the bucket as the icy water bit my fingers, I brought it out and scrubbed the floors hard. The huge hall stretched out around me with huge gleaming pillars, crystal chandeliers, and shiny marble. I scrunched so hard that I could see their reflection. The servants passed by as they spoke in hushed whispers, throwing occasional glances my way and I knew why. Since my arrival, I had never spoken, I didn't react until I was given an order by the matron and I barely ate or stayed around anyone. I was scared to do anything to make anyone recognize me. That alone earned me the title of the broken wolf but I was anything but broken, not anymore. “Hey mute,” someone sneered above me and I froze. I knew that voice. Rina. She had always hated or should I say jealous of the little kindness the older maids showed me. She stood behind me, as she glared at me. I gave her a look to let her know I was listening. “The matron wants you.” She said and I pointed to myself. She rolled her eyes, “are you also deaf now?” she asked but I just shook my head in response. “Good now get off your butt and go answer your call.” she let out a hiss and walked out. I stood up slowly and let out a sigh. What the hell would be the problem? I picked up my bucket and began my walk to the matron’s office. The walk to the matron’s office was something I dreaded. Every time it was time to assign chores, I secretly prayed to the moon goddess to give me something away from the eyes of the nobles. Even though I had run away from the bloodfang pack to Ashfang, I still don't want any interaction with the nobles. Being friends with one brought me here. I got to the door and took a breath, then knocked. “Come in” I heard Mrs Selena, the head matron. The kind woman who gave me a job after she found me begging in the streets. I quickly opened the door and to my surprise the office was packed with staff, including Rina who was giving me the stink eye with her little squad. As I looked around, I heard Mrs Selena’s voice, “Please come in, Sumi.” I gave a little bow as a form of greeting and walked to the corner. A gathering like this doesn't ever mean good news. “Since we are all finally here, let's get to the other side of business.” Mr Selena started, “ As you all know the week that's about to follow is the State of Astrid summit and all the Alphas, Lunas, Betas, and different nobles will be present at this summit. It would be a three-day summit, which would last from Monday.” She paused to let what she said sink into our heads. “But for us, it is a five-day summit.” She stood and walked towards the chart which was behind her. She lifted it and I could see a list of dates. “Tomorrow we have the arrivals of dignitaries and all personnel as been assigned a total of ten maids and ten guards by Nobel woman Janet, who is the host of the event on behalf of the high council. On Monday is a meeting, which we will need less but hang around if you are on duty. Then all Tuesday will be all hands on deck for the ball and then Wednesday will be the full moon summit.” When she was done, she looked at us, waiting for any of us to have questions but no one said anything. “Tracy will be passing around a sample of the events, which contains all the information about everything, including the pack you will be serving. Is that understood?” The room echoed with a loud yes but my heart was echoing with chorus. If all nobles will be present tomorrow, then it means that they would also be here and it was like they set off a bomb in my head. I have to find a way out of this and fast.
