Chapter Two
Hiding in plain sight
Tatsumi’s Pov
The pain, the betrayal, the tears. I looked as my blood was being spilled around the altar and Liora laughed like a manic as she twisted the knife deep down into my heart. I screamed as loud as blood pumped out of my mouth.
I looked to the side to see Storm Thorn, I stretched my hands out with tears-filled eyes, “p….plea…se,” I swallowed hard, while choking on my Okk blood, “help…m.e” but he stood there with cold eyes, “you deserve to die..” he said and walked away and I screamed for him to come back.
Liora's laughter brought my heart back to her, “You don't deserve him, b***h. Burn in hell…” She drove another blade down my heart and instead of pain, I felt a burning sensation. This was the worst of it all. It was like I was being burned from the inside out.
“Ahhhhh!”
I opened my eyes and instead of seeing Liora, everywhere was white. Another round of pain flooded my body, as I clenched my left shoulder.
“Ahhh, it hurts. Please stop!” I begged but it didn't stop, but I heard a voice and the shape of a huge wolf. It stood before me and I wanted to run away. It was a huge silver wolf. I turned back and started to run and the wolf was followed and before I could get far, it hit me with a force, entering my body and I screamed in pain.
I jolted up from my bed, my body soaked with sweat, my heart racing and pounding. I looked around and I was in the little servant room. I pushed down my bed sheet, pulling my dress up and checking for marks but there was no mark or scar.
“Ahh, s**t, it felt so real.” I swallowed hard as I flopped back on my bed I trying to calm myself down. “It's okay, it's not real,” I said to myself, as I tried to calmly get myself back to sleep.
But it wasn't possible as I stared at the ceiling for the rest of the night and then my alarm went off.
“I guess it is time to face my demons,” I said to myself.
****************************************************************
The day was far-fetched with different dignitaries coming in. It was a very busy day. I was prepared for the worst but I wasn't still prepared.
“Welcome the Bloodfang Pack……the Alpha Storm Thorn and Beta Liora Everflame.” the announcement boomed into the microphone and I turned back to run. s**t I wasn't ready to face them.
“Coming close, we welcome the Jackel pack…” the announcer said and I paused,
“s**t….why did they have to come now.” I cried within as I tried to sneak past the line of servants and get out and be back later when I was sure not to bump into them.
“Where the hell do you think you are going, mute?” I saw Rina’s face which had her ever scowl. Does she ever smile? I looked around to see a door that led to the bathroom and I pointed to it.
She turned to see what I was pointing out and she turned back at me, “You have five minutes or else I will tell on you that you bailed on your assignment and you know how Mrs Selene can be with people who flaunt her orders.”
I gave a little nod and dashed out there, just in time for the Storm and Liora was walking through the door. I quickly ran into the bathroom, my heart racing.
I can't do this! I can't do this!
I could feel tears coming out of my eyes. This was not what I signed up for. I wasn't ready to face the people who killed me. The girl who I thought was my friend but was the one to stab me in the heart.
I sank to the cold marble floor, pressing my back against the wall of the servant’s bathroom, trying to steady my breathing. My chest rose and fell rapidly, and the pounding in my ears drowned out everything else. The image of Storm Thorn’s cold gaze haunted me—those lifeless eyes staring as he walked away, leaving me to bleed and die on that altar.
Why was he here? Why now?
I gripped the edge of the sink, forcing myself to stand. My reflection in the cracked mirror looked like a ghost—pale, wild-eyed, drenched in sweat. I splashed water on my face, over and over again, as if that could wash away the memories clawing at my mind.
“Get it together, Tatsumi. You’re not that weak girl anymore. You’ve been given another chance”
The door creaked open and I froze.
“Tatsumi?” a soft voice called out.
My blood ran cold, it was Liora.
I covered my mouth, stepping back slowly toward the farthest stall. Her heels clicked softly on the tiled floor as she moved further into the room.
“I know you’re in here,” she said, sing-song, almost gleeful. “I could smell your fear the moment we stepped in, poor little thing, are you still trembling, even in your new life?”
How? How did she know? I pressed myself into the corner of the stall, barely breathing, praying she would just leave but then I saw the shadows under the stall door—her feet stopped right in front of mine.
The silence stretched.
Then she spoke again, low and venomous. “You thought coming back would make a difference? That you could hide? Sweetheart, even death couldn’t make you matter.”
My fingers curled into fists, nails digging into my palms. I wanted to scream. I wanted to fight.
“I should’ve made sure you stayed dead,” she whispered.
Suddenly, the bathroom lights flickered. A low growl echoed through the room—it wasn't something normal, it didn't feel natural.
The shadows shifted and that’s when Liora gasped. A gust of wind burst through the room, slamming the stalls open one by one, except mine, and then silence fell.
Then I heard a voice, it was deeper and for some reason sounded ancient, and it spoke from behind Liora.
“She is mine now and you… have trespassed.”
I heard as Liora screamed and in an instant—silence.
I opened the stall door but Liora was gone. All that remained was a smear of blood… and a silver claw mark across the wall.
