Chapter 2

After a while the door was opened, and I heard soft footsteps walk in then the door was locked. Whoever walked in came straight to my bed and removed my blind fold. My eyes hurt from the sudden light that entered my eyes. This was my chance to see where I was. The floor was made of wood, no wonder I could hear every person’s footsteps whenever they came in. The walls were plain beige without any pictures or paintings. The room had large windows with white curtains falling from the ceiling to the floor. The room was small with only a bed and a stool by the bed side. There was another door which I thought led to a bathroom or closet. “Hi dear, I’m Stella and I have brought you something to eat” the lady before me spoke and brought me back to earth. Her voice was soft and kind. Ms. Stella was old, she looked a day over forty. She wore a charcoal grey dress with a white apron tied to her neck and waist. She also had a head scurf holding her hair back. I could see a few strands of her jet-black hair and from her looks and accent I knew she was Mexican. She unhooked the chain holding my hands up down and untangled the chains from my wrists. I rubbed my wrists immediately which had bruised from the chain. “I will get you some ointment for your wrists” she said then got a tray of food from the stool. I didn’t notice the tray of food all this while. “There’s a bathroom in there” she pointed to the door other than the one I figured was the main door to this room. “Do you want to freshen up?” she asked, and I opened my mouth to speak but my voice was suck in my throat and no words came out, so I nod my head instead. She helped me get off the bed and walked me to the said bathroom. She opened the door for me. The small yet spacious bathroom had teal tiles from the ceiling to the floor. There was a bathtub, a toilet and sink with a cabinet above it and mirror attached to it. I stood in front of the sink and looked at my reflection in the mirror. I was pale. How long had I been here? I opened the tap and rinsed my face after which I wiped with a towel Ms. Stella handed to me. She escorted me back to the bed where I made myself comfortable. “Here drink this” she handed me a white mug. I received it and looked at it’s contents, it was milk with a yellowish powder “it’s warm milk with turmeric powder, it will help your stomach” she said, and I drunk it. After I finished drinking the milk, she offered me mashed potatoes with beef stew. The mash was amazing, and the beef stew was even more delicious. I am not sure if I was just super hungry or it reminded me of the delicious meals my nana made for Luca and me when we were little. Luca, my brother. I missed him so much in that very moment. Did he know that I had been kidnapped? Did anyone know? Where was Hanna and was, she safe? I recall the man saying ‘two girls’ who was the second girl? Could that be Hanna? Hanna was loud and I could have heard her voice by now. The questions kept playing in my head. Ms. Stella was so kind, she had fed me the food she brought in and offered me fruits, but I couldn’t eat anymore food, my stomach was so full. She placed a tall glass of water and the bowel of freshly cut fruit on the stool near my bed for later. “Get some rest dear, I will come back later and give you a bath” she tucked me in bed and picked up the tray of now empty bowels and plates. She walked to the door and knocked twice before the door was unlocked and she stepped out. The moment she left I drifted into a deep sleep.                                       ************************************     I woke up to the sound of running water. I opened her eyes and the room was dark with a bit of light coming from the bathroom. The sun must have already set, and it was nighttime. I sat up and stretched myself before I stood up and made my way to the bathroom. I opened the door and found Stella running a bath I presumed was mine. “Oh, you’re awake. Come” she waved I go forward, and I did. “Your bath is ready, let me help you with it” The bathroom was full of scents I couldn’t quite figure out. It smelled of rose petals, milk, Jasmin and other beautiful scents I couldn’t identify. I stripped off all my clothes and entered the bathtub. The water was nice and hot just the way I liked it. Ms. Stella bathed me with a sponge. She washed my whole body including my hair and I let her because I was hopeless. I didn’t know where I was or why I was there to begin with. I didn’t even know what day it was. After I finished having my bath Ms. Stella brought me a fresh change of clothes, white sweatshirt, black vest and black sweatpants. She gave me a pair of socks and slippers too. “Would you like anything to eat or drink?” she asked “No thank you” I looked at bowel of fruits she left earlier “I will have this when I get hungry” I told her. She smiled and held my chin, “It shall soon be well” she said this and left the room. There was nothing else for me to do so I forced myself to sleep.                                         *******************************   The next morning came and I woke up stretching my whole body. I got out of bed and walked over to the window. I drew the curtains which then revealed a view I didn’t expect. All I could see were tall trees and mountains in a distance. I quickly went to the bathroom and peeped through the small window, I saw the same thing, trees and mountains. Panic run through my mind. Where on earth was I??? I heard the bedroom door open and I walked back into the room to see who it was and found Ms. Stella making my bed. “I was going to make the bed you didn’t have too” I said “Oh no it’s fine, I am almost done” said Ms. Stella “If you insist. How did you sleep?” I asked “I slept well thank you for asking” she smiled as she laid the pillows nicely “And how did you sleep dear?” “I slept well. Ms. Stella can I ask you something?” I asked “Sure, thing my dear” “Where are we?” I asked “Why do you ask?” she responded “Well from the windows all I see are trees and mountains” I informed her and moved towards the window “Nowhere in Manhattan will you find so many trees and mountains” I looked out the window and I heard her chuckle. “We definitely aren’t in Manhattan dear” she said “Then where are we?” I asked her “With time you will find out dear. Now what would you like for breakfast?” she changed the subject just like that without giving me my answer. I was going to pester her until I got the answer, I thought fit, but I decided not to, she was a good and kind woman to me. I am sure her superior asked her not to tell me. “Anything, I am not allergic to anything” I told her “Well and good, I will bring you something shortly” she excused herself and left the room. She returned shortly as she had said with breakfast. An egg sandwich with orange juice and an apple. After I had my breakfast, I went to take a bath and freshen up. While I was in the bath, I found Ms. Stella had brought me books to read which she left on the bed. The books were all new, they didn’t belong to anyone in the house I presume. They were four in total and they all seemed to be connected. They all had “The bully series” written on them. So, I figured out which one I should read first, and I picked ‘The school bully’ the back of the book read, shy bookworm Sophia Gideon wished she had a boyfriend like in her books. But her wish backfired when she caught the interest of her school's most vicious bully. Rumors has it he enjoyed beating up people, enjoyed making them suffer in the worst possible way. Sophia was convinced he was a monster. A cruel, unfeeling, soulless monster. But was he? It seemed interesting and that’s how I got swamped with reading. “I don’t want to hear anything go wrong” I heard a man speak loudly. After a short while my door was unlocked, and Ms. Stella walked in with a tray of food. I hadn’t noticed that it was already lunch time. “Hi dear, I see you’re enjoying the books I brought you earlier” she said as she placed the tray of food on the tool besides my bed. “Yes, thank you. The books are interesting” I smiled at the book “Wow you have a beautiful smile” she sat next to me on the bed “You should smile more often dear” I would if I could. My life was messed up, my parents were so engrossed in their fights and never cared about Luca and me. “I heard voices outside this room. Who was that?” I asked with hope that she would give me a satisfying answer “Mr Giovani, the owner of this place” she said “At least now that his gone back to Italy, you can finally stretch your legs out of this room” she said “Really? That would be nice, I feel the walls are starting to speak to me” I was looking forward to stepping out of this room. “Have your lunch before it gets cold” she stood up and patted my shoulder “I will come back later” and she left the room. Ms. Stella brought me steamed rice with a vegetable stair fry and chicken stew. The food was amazing, and I hoped to meet the chef and thank them for the delicious meals. After I finished with my lunch, I continued reading Sophia and Leon’s story. Ms. Stella never returned to my room as she had said she would. Nighttime came and kept reading until I was too tired to read anymore.
