The days that followed the day Rex almost choked me to death went by in a blur. I avoided him and Veda most of the time. I stopped sitting with them at the dining table for any meal. Instead, I had the maid bring my food in. Zoe had called several times and I had assured her that I was fine. I snapped out of my mood when I remembered that the next day was the day I would follow Rex to the Alphas' convention. I stood before my wardrobe wondering what clothes to take along. The previous year, I had seen the look on other Lunas' faces when they saw me arrive with Rex to the dinner party that always signified the end of the convention but Rex had told me that I looked just okay. I didn't want to get the look I had been getting for the past three years since I started attending as Rex's mate. I thought about it for a while and when I ran out of options, I called Zoe. She picked up the phone and when I told her about my dilemma, she immediately got into her car and drove down to my house. "Okay baby, your fairy godmother is here," Zoe said as she walked into my room. "Don't be so dramatic Zoe," I said smiling. The first one in days. "I should be dramatic. In fact, I should make noise about it. You want to look good? It is a first and I am happy baby," Zoe said dramatically making me roll my eyes. "I do not want anything dramatic. I want to wear something different from my usual way of dressing," I said. "Yeah. I am happy that you finally decided to stop dressing like your grandma," Zoe said rolling her eyes. "It is not that bad. Besides, Rex likes my conservative way of dressing," I said sadly. "Of course he does. No wonder that slut is in your sitting room," Zoe said rolling her eyes. "She is there?" I asked because I didn't even know who was home and who was not since I hadn't been out of my room for days. "Do not tell me you now live in your room and leave that slut alone to run your home?" Zoe asked angrily. "Zoe, please don't start. The important thing is that my room gives me peace so I will gladly stay here," I said then quickly got my bag and ushered Zoe out of the room. "Fine. You are patronising my stores today right?" Zoe asked as we stepped out of my room. Zoe had two stores in the pack, one that catered to men wears and the other had female wears in different designs but I had not patronised her much because of the fear of buying something that would not sit well with Rex. "Let's go to your store first. I said I wanted something different right? So let's see how it goes," I said smiling at her. "Yeah! That is what I am talking about," Zoe said excitedly. I saw Veda sitting on the sofa of the sitting room watching television with a cup of juice and a plate of snacks placed on the table before her but I totally ignored her. "Is Rex aware that you are going out?" Veda asked before Zoe and I made it to the door. "How is that any of your concern?" Zoe turned to Veda and asked before I could say anything. "I wasn't talking to you," Veda said rudely to Zoe. "Zoe," I called her name to caution her. "No, Fay. Do not stop me from giving this slut a piece of my mind," Zoe said and Veda instantly got out of the sofa with her eyes blazing in anger. "How dare you call me a slut?" Veda asked in anger. "Aren't you a slut? A shameless one at that. After killing your mate, you came here and disrupted a peaceful home. You should be ashamed of yourself slut Veda. I know you aim to sleep with your husband's brother but believe me, you will fail," Zoe said bitterly. "How dare you accuse me of killing my mate?" Veda said but she was visibly shaken by Zoe's words. What passed in her eyes at that moment was not anger, it looked more like fear but she expertly banked it before I could analyse it. "If you didn't kill your mate, why are you making a play for his brother?" Zoe sneered. "You are a witch," Veda said gritting her teeth. "Really? If I am a witch, what are you, Veda? You killed your husband then came here so that you can have his brother. What do you call that? Isn't that witchcraft?" Zoe hissed. "I will tell Rex about this and he will deal with you appropriately," Veda said pointing at me making me grit my teeth. "Don't flatter yourself, Veda. Even if you get him to sleep with you, you are just another warm body. You will never be his wife nor the Luna of this pack," I hissed. "If I wanted you out of this house, I would have done that the minute I got here," Veda said smiling mockingly. "You jest. If you could, I would be out of this house already. You probably tried and he told you point-blank that he couldn't leave his Luna," I said and the smile on Veda's face turned sour. I had guessed right. "He is only keeping you for the sake of remaining an Alpha. You mean nothing to him," Veda said bitterly. I chuckled softly then said, "That is the edge that I have over you, Veda. Just know your place and continue being his second best, else, I will have you thrown out of this house on your slutty butts," I said then quickly pulled Zoe out of the house. When Zoe was about to start the car, I placed a hand on her to stop her. She turned to me with a question in her eyes. "Is it my mind or did Veda actually turn pale when you accused her of killing her husband?" "She did turn pale and she looked scared that was why I kept on saying it," Zoe said thoughtfully. "She couldn't have killed her husband right?" I asked. "She is a desperate female and people like her can do anything just to get what they want," Zoe said with a shrug. Zoe started the car after that and we fell into silence. I couldn't help but wonder if Veda had actually killed her husband just to be with Rex. The thought of that made me uneasy. Very uneasy.
