MACINTOSH The story started in the winter, when I was a reporter for one of the city newspapers and the editor-in-chief gave me an assignment to write a story about a homeless person. The editor was in two minds at first – perhaps this assignment was too difficult for me, would I be able to deliver? But, with stubbornness that is characteristic of me, I would have none of it, I assured him that I would do a good job. He took his time to explain the complications and nuances of the task, saying that I had to pick someone as the hero of my story who was at the bottom of the social ladder while managing to retain his or her humanity, so that we could pull at the emotional strings of our readers.
