Chapter 32

“Death is a tragedy in the young and a right of passage for the old. But I guess he thought of it as an escape,” Damek mentioned. Just as Gon shook his head, he said, “And I could clearly remember how his wife swear at his dead body.” When the paramedics left, Gon looked at the child. She was mumbling and whining and he could strangely feel her suffering. “Oh my god! My daughter!” A woman rushing inside the emergency room surprised everyone. She was crying and she kept on saying the name of her daughter. “Ali, my daughter! Oh my god, please save my daughter! Ali, please don’t leave me...” Two female nurses approached her and tried to calm her, but she was too devastated to see her child. “I’m sorry, Ali. I’m sorry,” the mother cried. “Madam, please. You’re not allowed here. Let us escort you outside.” Suddenly, Nurse Gwen who looked a little derailed, inched close to Gon. She said, “Doctor Gon, the child’s father...” “What about him?” A sound of wheels screeching against the floor, impelling on forward with speed caught their attention. It was another stretcher with a man on it. “DOA, Doctor Gon,” the paramedic declared. “It’s Ali’s father.” As soon as the mother heard it, she started to hyperventilate. But instead of feeling sorry for his husband, she shouted and swear at him. Everyone could feel her anger towards the man who should be the one who protected his own children. The mother was cloaked with rage and resentment. “It’s his faith! He killed our son!” the mother cried as nurses tried to stop her from inching close to his husband’s body. “He’s so ruthless to kill them!” “Madam, please. Let’s go outside.” “He’s heartless! That suits him!” Before she turned to exit with nurses holding both of her arms, her eyes met Gon’s. All he could do was to heave a deep sigh as how the mother could be so frustrated. “He was declared dead on arrival.” Damek sighed. Caressing his friend’s back, he said, “Life could be so cruel, but what else can we do? It’s just sad that there are parents like him who would do such an unacceptable thing to his own daughter and son.” “I don’t think he deserve to be called parent for what he did,” Gon commented, slighty shaking his head. “He should have just live all himself alone than having his own family being killed because of him.” “I felt sorry for the wife and Ali, as well as the deceased child and the father,” said Damek. “They could have been more happy if they talk about everything and solve whatever they had been struggling with. They’re family after all.” “I don’t feel sorry for the father at all. He killed his own child, Damek. I don’t know everything, but those kids shouldn’t experience it when in fact parents should be the one who should protect their child.” “Well...” Damek nodded. “Let’s just pray for them, I guess?” Gon took another sip of coffee while Damek chewed the last bite of his egg sandwich. As they both let out a sigh, Gon remembered another patient yesterday. “Damek?” he called. Sipping his coffee, Damek looked at Gon with raised brows. “Um?” “Jayda’s boyfriend. What’s his name again?” Damek blinked. He felt it was so sudden for Gon to ask it, so he instantly got curious. Instead of answering his question, he asked back, “Why? Have you forgotten it already? What’s with him?” “I’m just curious.” Damek’s eyes squinted. “It’s Faris.” “Faris?” “You heard it. So?” “Doctor Gon?” Intern Fara was scratching her nape and looked so hesitant. As Gon got curious, he asked, “Anything else?” The intern smiled bitterly and answered, “Just wondering, Doctor Gon. I noticed that he was smelling his wounded arm as if it was really pleasing to his nose.” “Smelling?” Gon’s brows knitted in wonder. “You got his name?” “Ah, yes! It’s... um.” Gon crossed his arms and waited for her to remember the guy’s name. “It’s Fa...” “Fa?” “Fa... ris. Faris?” “Faris?” “Yes, Doctor. It’s Faris.” Gon unconsciously nodded when he was reminded about the patient’s name that Intern Fara told him yesterday. “Gon?” Damek nudged him, waiting for him to speak again. “There is—” But Gon was cut off when his phone rang. Just as he saw that it was Fara on the screen, he looked at Damek and motioned that he was going to take the call first. Gon stood up and walked at the corner of his office. Just as he pressed the answer button, he said, “Yes, Intern Fara?” He heard the woman cleared her throat on the other line before he received a good morning greeting from her. She said, “I’m sorry if I called you this early in the morning. I just want to clear something about yesterday.” His forehead creased a little. “Yesterday?” he asked. “About the patient with odd behavior, Doctor Gon. The man whom I noticed smelling his blood.” Gon glanced back at Damek. He slid his other hand inside his pocket and breathed. Damek was browsing his phone, and just too serious looking at it. Moving his attention back to the call, he managed to ask, “What’s wrong?” “I told you a wrong information. His name isn’t Faris. It’s Percy,” Intern Fara announced. “I made a mistake.” He froze for a while by hearing it. Massaging his nape, he queried, “Are you sure that it really isn’t Faris, but Percy?” “Yes, I’m really certain now.” Gon breathed heavily. It took him few seconds to respond. “Okay. Thank you.” “I’m really sorry, Doctor Gon.” “No worries.” Then Gon ended the call. As Gon inched back beside Damek, the guy started to throw questions at him again, obviously too curious. “Anything happened?” Damek asked, but Gon just wagged his head. “So? Back to the topic. What about Faris?” Gon just smiled. “Nothing. I’m just wondering what he looks like. Like if he’s more handsome than you or—” “Seriously?” Damek cut in. Gon laughed as he saw how Damek glared at him. “Well, I’m sure Jayda loves him and not you,” Gon teased him which made Damek throw a pillow at him. He couldn’t tell him about that patient when it was not Faris at all. “You jerk! I should’ve not brought you breakfast!” Damek yelled, pouting over what Gon told him. “You did it yourself, so don’t blame me.” Although Gon was smiling over Damek’s reactions, he couldn’t deny the fact that the name Faris itself started to give him chills. It was like something mystery all of a sudden. It’s Percy and not Faris. Why the hell am I feeling eerie? he thought to himself.
