Chapter 1

The air was filled with the smell of blood. It was so thick that no one could pick out one distinctive smell from the next. Damien’s heart was in his throat. Lilly, his baby sister was in the house, and he feared the worst. Damn Vampire Hunters! Damn Elena for befriending them and leading them right to their front door step! He was going to choke the life out of her, when he found her. It was unforgivable what she had done. Damien and Drake follow the scent through the house. There was so much blood that had been spilled throughout the house. Where was Lilly and Elena? There was no sound in the house, the hunters must have left. But still you couldn’t be too careful. In the family room, they found a site that robed Damien of his breath. Lilly was lying in a pool of blood on the floor, Elena covering her body. There were three other bodies on the floor, all dead. “Lilly, please wake up. Please…” Elena sobbed softly, shaking Lilly by the shoulders. She sensed movement behind her and jumped up with the knife she still had, ready to defend Lilly against the new threat. Damien and Drake stare at Elena in shock. She was covered in blood, from head to toe. Her eyes were wild. “What have you done?” Damien demanded of Elena. Between Lilly and Elena, he couldn’t decide who was covered in more blood. Lilly was extremely pale, she must have lost too much blood. “It wasn’t me!” Elena shouted back at him. She’d lowered the knife the minute she saw both Damien and Drake. At least there were no more threats. She didn’t know if she would have been able to take on anyone else. She was freaked out. Lilly had hit her head on the side table and wouldn’t wake up. Vampires were supposed to be fast healers. Why wouldn’t she wake up? “Of course, it was you! You befriended the hunters and lead them right to our home!” Damien shouted. He was fuming. Lilly was alive, but he had no idea for how long. She needed blood. Moving forward, he roughly pushed Elena out of the way. Had he not been so distracted and concerned for his sister, he would have noticed her falling over. Elena watched Damien and Drake kneel next to their sister and fuss over her. Lilly was her best friend and she had failed to protect her against the hunters. Shame was something that she had never experienced before. It was a bitter, foul taste in her mouth. How could she have been so stupid to have believed their lies? Lilly was special, she was kind, she wanted to help, she was no threat to humans. How could they not see that? She had to explain to Damien. “Damien-“ before she could say anything, he was standing in front of her, anger radiated off him in waves. Taken aback, Elena took a step back. “Get out,” he growled at her. “Don’t ever set foot in this house again.” The little color that Elena had, left her face in a rush. Damien had never spoken to her in such a way. There was such hatred in his eyes, they were practically glowing. He was blaming her for this. And yes, it had been her stupidity that had led to this, but surely, he knew she would never have put Lilly in harm’s way on purpose? Suddenly she was so angry, she could have spit fire at him. “I’m not going anywhere. Lilly is my friend.” She growled at him. “I don’t care, what you say, I’m telling you to leave this house, before I help you on your way. You’ve been nothing but trouble! If it hadn’t been for you, Lilly would be unharmed now, not fighting for her life!” There was no answer she could give to that. It was all true. Lilly was hurt, because of her. Giving him a murderous look, Elena storms off. She would not break down in front of him. She would not show him how much she was hurting. Walking through the house, Elena flung the knife she had been holding out to the side. She didn’t notice how it imbedded itself in a pillar. She didn’t notice anything as she walked out the house and jumped on her bike, popped her helmet on her head and sped off. Not giving anyone a second look as she left the property. The security was going to have a fine time cleaning up the mess. Damien carried Lilly to her room, shouting orders to anyone around. Many of the staff where covered in blood, with scratches, cuts, bruises and more evidence of the fight they had put up against the hunters. One of the maids, Sally, came rushing into Lilly’s room with towels and warm water, ushering them out of the room. Drake and Damien wait outside impatiently. Drake drummed his fingers on the balustrade while Damien wore a path into the polished wooden floors. They were both worried about their sister. When they were finally allowed back into Lilly’s bedroom, they were relieved to see her awake. “Where is Elena?” Lilly asked. There was worry in her pale blue eyes. She was a bit pale, but looked to be gaining color in her face slowly. She was healing. “I sent her away,” Damien said shortly. He was still furious with her. He had to restrain himself from punching the wall. Lilly frowned at her brother’s words, “You sent her to the doctor, yes?” Drake frowned at Lilly. She was twisting her hands in her lap and seemed extremely destressed about where Elena had gone. Clearly, she was concerned about something they didn’t know, and he could see that Damien was about to start a rant about Elena, and decided to cut him off. “Lilly, sweets, Elena was fine, you were lying in a pool of blood downstairs, we were more concerned with you,” he said gently. “What!!” Drake and Damien both winced at her reaction. Lilly had always been quiet and sweet, this furious person, was a new side and neither knew how to deal with it. Lilly started pushing the bedspread off her so that she could get up. Her two brothers who she loved dearly where also two of the biggest idiots she knew. “I was knocked unconscious! I was lying in Elena’s blood, you buffoons! Those hunters stabbed her, and cut her up trying to get to me and you sent her away without checking if she needed a doctor!” Lilly’s eyes were spitting fire at her brothers. “She saves my life, and you thank her by sending her away like some errant child?” Damien winced. Now that Lilly had been cleaned up, he could see there had been no real harm done to her. There were no cuts, just a bump on her head where she had been knocked unconscious. He suddenly realized that Elena had been to easily pushed out of the way when he had rushed to Lilly’s side. And now that he thought of it, he had smelled her blood, he could still smell her blood on the clothing lying on the floor. “There are three dead bodies downstairs,” Drake said slowly. Damien had gone very pale and he had a feeling he was just as pale. “Elena killed them,” Lilly said, rubbing her arms, remembering how they had come at her and how Elena had jumped in front of them, taking a stab in the arm from one of the hunters meant for Lilly. Before she had been knocked back and hit her head on the table, she had seen one of the hunters stab Elena in the stomach. Damien noticed Lilly lose all color in her face. “I have to find her, she’s hurt.” Lilly was frantic. Her movements agitated as she struggled against the bedsheets. “What is it Lilly,” Damien asked, dread filling him. When Lilly looked at him, his heart dropped, he had never seen his sister look at him as if he was a stranger to her. The disappointment and hurt, broke his heart. “They stabbed her in the stomach! She could be dying right now, and you sent her away!” Damien staggered back from his sister as if she had just physically punched him. His legs felt weak and his head was spinning. He looked at Drake and he saw his own horror reflected in his brother’s eyes. They had failed. A silent message passed between them. Damien spun around and raced out of Lilly’s room. He had to find Elena and apologize for being a bastard. His fear for his sister was no excuse for treating her the way he had. She was practically family. He berated himself all the way to her home. How was he going to apologize? What state was he going to find her in? If she was still alive, she’d probably take a swing at him for being an ass. He would take it too. As long as she was alive, he’d take anything she dolled out. What he didn’t expect, was Elena’s parents to come rushing out of their house, looking freaked. Jill’s eyes were bloodshot, she’d been crying, she was still crying. James was pale and barely holding himself together. “What happened?” Jill asked. “There’s so much blood.” Her lower lip started quivering. James held Jill to his chest, trying to comfort her, when he didn’t know what to make of the situation. “There was an attack by the Vampire Hunters, they were after Lilly,” Damien said, he could smell Elena’s blood. How had he missed it before? “Oh my, is Lilly okay? Was she injured?” Jill asked. Concern etched all over her. “Just a bump on the head,” Damien assured her. Frowning he looked from Jill to James, something was wrong. “Where’s Elena?” Jill’s eyes filled with tears as she turned and buried her face in her husband’s chest. James swallowed. Damien felt the earth shift under his feet. “She’s gone.” James whispered. Damien locked his knees to stop himself from crashing to the ground. She was gone. He was too late. His heart disintegrated. “We found bloody clothes in her room. A few of her things are gone,” James continued, as he held his wife to him. At first the words didn’t penetrate the haze in his mind and then it did, and his head snapped up. “What do you mean a few of her things are gone?” He asked. “She packed a bag. She left the house and we don’t know where’s she’s gone,” James said. Tears were running down his face. He couldn’t understand why Elena wood take off, especially if she was hurt. Damien couldn’t believe it. She had left, she wasn’t dead. He wanted to shout with joy, but now was not the time. He rushed into the house. He found his way to Elena’s bedroom. He had only been there once, years ago when she was still a little girl with pigtails. There in the corner was the clothes she had been wearing earlier, covered in her blood, but there was also the smell of other blood donors there. He picked up the cloths and looked at the holes in them. He closed his eyes when he saw the hole where she had been stabbed in the stomach. There was so much blood there. He followed the scent of her blood to the bathroom. He stood there, staring, trying to understand what he was looking at. She had taken a shower, she’d clearly had a fight with the shower and the shower had lost. The shower curtain was ripped, as if she had slipped and grabbed hold of it to stay upright. The soap dispenser was on the floor, knocked off the wall. There was a dent in the wall, as he bent to take a closer look he saw a few hairs stuck to the dent. She had hit her head when she slipped and fell. What the hell had happened here? And where the hell was Elena? Damien turned and walked outside. Her bike was parked in the drive, so she must have taken off on foot. Taking a deep breath, he breathed the scents in around him, sifting through it until he found what he was looking for. He followed the scent. It took him from the neighborhood she had grown up in, through town to the other side where the bus station was and then the scent stopped. Frustrated, Damien chatted to the people behind the counter to try to find out which bus she had taken, but they had just changed shifts, so no one could tell him anything about the previous customers who had taken a trip. It was clear that Elena had taken off, but why and where was she going? Damien wanted to strangle her all over again. What was she thinking taking off like that? Surely, she realized that her family would be worried about her, that Lilly would be worried, that he would be worried. Damien pulled out his phone and called Drake. He wasn’t walking home now. He asked Drake to meet him at the station. After he spoke to Drake he phoned Elena’s parents to tell them he lost track of her at the bus station, but he assured them that he would not rest until he found her and brought her home. Facing Lilly with the news that he had lost Elena and couldn’t find her was going to be hard. Lilly had looked at him like he had failed her in the worst way and this was just going to strengthen her belief. She was never going to forgive him for this. Damien stared off into the distance as he contemplated what he was going to do. He would find Elena. He would bring her home. And he’d tan her hide for putting them all through hell for this stunt. Even if it was the last thing he did, he would do it.
