First Illusions

390 Words
The spring air was crisp, carrying the scent of blooming roses, as Isabella stepped into the small café Ethan had chosen for their morning date. Her red dress swirled lightly around her knees, vibrant against the muted colors of the room. Every time she wore red, it felt like armor bold, defiant, alive and today, she needed that courage more than ever. Ethan stood as she entered, smiling, his eyes lighting up at the sight of her. “Red again,” he said softly, brushing a stray hair from her face. “You make the world feel warmer just by being in it.” Isabella’s cheeks flushed. “It’s a promise,” she said quietly. “Red reminds me that even ordinary days can feel extraordinary.” They sat by the window, coffee steaming between them, and talked about everything and nothing. He shared a memory from childhood, and she laughed until tears pricked her eyes. For a moment, nothing else existed the café, the world outside, even time itself, just them, wrapped in the intimacy of soft words and glances that lingered too long. But even in the warmth, a shadow pressed lightly against Isabella’s chest. A small, stabbing pain when she laughed too hard, a fleeting dizziness as she stood, she brushed it off, afraid to acknowledge it. Love felt too precious to taint with fear. Ethan, noticing the way she shifted slightly in her chair, reached across the table and took her hand. “Isabella… are you okay?” His voice was gentle, but concern ran beneath every word. “I’m fine,” she whispered, forcing a smile. “Just… a little tired.” He didn’t let go of her hand, though. “You don’t have to hide anything from me,” he said softly. “I want every piece of you even the parts you’re afraid of showing.” She squeezed his hand, the ache in her chest growing stronger. The truth of how fleeting life could be whispered in her ears, a reminder that happiness like this could not last forever. As they walked through the city afterward, lights reflecting off wet pavements, Isabella’s red dress glowed like a warning. Love had entered her life fully, beautifully, and dangerously. And she knew, deep down, that the first illusions of forever could shatter at any moment.
