Fading Light

376 Words
The golden glow of late afternoon spilled through the windows of Isabella’s apartment as she stood by the small balcony, her red dress catching the last rays of the sun. She had chosen it deliberately, a flame against the fading light, a reminder to herself that she was still alive, still bold, still here. Ethan arrived moments later, carrying a bouquet of her favorite flowers. His smile faltered the second he noticed her pale hands resting lightly on the balcony railing. “Isabella… are you feeling alright?” he asked gently, concern flickering in his eyes. “I’m fine,” she replied, forcing a smile. “Just… tired from the day.” He didn’t press, but his hand found hers instinctively. “You’ve been pushing yourself too hard,” he whispered. “I can see it, even if you don’t want to admit it.” They spent the evening quietly, sharing memories of past travels, laughter echoing softly between them. Every touch, every look, was imbued with an urgency neither dared to name. The red of her dress glowed in the soft lamplight, bold and alive, even as shadows gathered beneath her eyes. Later, as Ethan held her close on the couch, she leaned against his chest. “Do you ever think,” she murmured, “that happiness can be too much for one lifetime?” He stroked her hair, swallowing hard. “No,” he said firmly, though his voice trembled. “Happiness is never too much… not with you.” A sudden wave of dizziness made her clutch him tightly. “Ethan…” she whispered, fear lacing her tone. “I’m here,” he said, pressing a kiss to her temple. “I’m not going anywhere.” They stayed like that long into the night, two hearts bound together against the growing shadows. The red of her dress, once just a color, now seemed like a warning, a flare against the dark, fragile and fleeting. As she drifted off in his arms, Isabella knew their time was limited. But in that embrace, she allowed herself a rare moment of peace, letting love and warmth wash over her. Even as the light faded, she burned brightly in his arms, a memory he would never forget.
