NATHAN AND JENNIFER reached the room used by Jean Martin in just a couple of minutes, and when they got there Nathan knocked loudly and called out. “Mr Martin, it’s Inspector Stone, open up please, I need to ask you some questions.” When there was no response after half a minute, Nathan knocked again and then tried the door handle. The door was locked, which he supposed could mean the chef was somewhere else in the hotel, occupying himself in some way before he started work, but some instinct told him that something was wrong. “Have you got a spare key for this door?” Nathan asked, rattling the door handle again before dropping to one knee to press an eye to the keyhole in the hope of seeing something of the room.
