JJ was straightening the living room (how in God’s name had Evie’s smelly gym shirt made its way under the couch cushions?) when Trooper let out a single woof. A smile crossed JJ’s face as she watched Grant’s cruiser climb her driveway. She and Trooper went out to meet him, and she laughed when Grant got out of the car. “How romantic,” she said. “That’s your apology for running out on our date last night?” Grant held a nesting pair of large, aluminum dog bowls in his hands, as though they were a cake on a too-small platter.
