16 JJ had avoided Dorothy last night by waiting in the car while Evie delivered Rachel’s homework assignments. This morning, she let Evie run inside (when in doubt, Evie always wanted to be in motion) to fetch Rachel so JJ could drop the girls at school. Dorothy had waved from the doorway, and JJ waved back, so maybe they’d already progressed to pretending nothing had ever happened. JJ hoped so. She didn’t need additional drama in her life right now, and Evie and Rachel didn’t deserve it, either. To that end, she hadn’t interrogated her daughter any more about Rachel’s dreams and, playing it safe, she’d barely spoken to Rachel this morning except to ask how she was feeling. She didn’t think the girls had noticed; Evie was good at taking up any conversational slack. JJ would respect Dorot
