“Are you sure Teddy’s right about where Danny’s headed?” JJ asked. “Yes,” Harlan said, without hesitation. That’s all she needed to know, that he was sure. Merging onto the interstate, JJ said, “If you want to do something useful, you can pour me a cup of coffee.” Dorothy had tucked two thermoses into the bag, one with coffee and one with a thin, brothy soup. JJ struggled to keep the Bronco steady against sudden, heavy winds as Harlan poured carefully into a cup wedged between his knees. He held it patiently until it was safe for her to remove a hand from the wheel. “Thanks. The soup should probably be okay for you, but don’t overdo it. I wouldn’t risk the muffins yet.
