The hours of driving were a blur to Adam. While parking Luther’s SUV at the fork in the road, he’d noticed an empty bottle of water and granola bar wrapper on the seat next to him. He had no recollection of opening or consuming either of them. He’d stumbled from the vehicle, not quite sure why he’d stopped.
And then he’d found the stones.
A wall of rock drew his eye first, a massive boulder streaked with lichen and strewn with dead leaves. About the width of a generous living room and as high on one end, the other side sloped to almost join the ground. Time and weather were doing their best to separate the single boulder into boulders, as was a tree perched atop it.
