I was surprised when Manfred offered all six of them employment as “security” officers in his company. It would shortly prove to have been an astute move.
Three weeks later I received a cable from Colum telling me that Anna Marie had given birth to a boy and that she would be relocating to Chicago in six months. I was both delighted and saddened. I wondered if I would ever meet the boy or, for that matter, if I would ever see Anna Marie again. My heart said, Return to the United States. See your daughter and her new baby, but my head said, Stay where you are. Don’t contact her. Keep her safe.
