Chapter 31When I walked into Manfred’s house after taking Estella home, I was in the best mood I had been in in months. That changed when I found Adaline sitting at the kitchen table with Grace, crying. Adaline looked up at me as I walked in.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s Manfred. He should have been home a week ago. Now I’m worried sick. He hasn’t telephoned or sent me a telegram. It’s not like him . . . . I think something has happened.”
“When was the last time you heard from him?”
“Two weeks ago.”
“Where was he?”
“His cable said he was in a town called Pagadian on his way to Zamboanga to catch a steamer back to Manila. Here, take a look.”
She handed me a cable that had been folded and unfolded so many times that it was beginning to fall apart.
