Chapter 19I spent most of the next morning trying to make a phone call to General Funston in Veracruz. I needed to give him a report on my time with Carranza and his generals. After two frustrating hours with operators in Chicago and Mexico, I was ready to give up. Finally, the telephone rang. “Battles? Battles? Is that you?” the metallic voice on the other end asked. It was Funston. “Yes, General, it’s me. Can you hear me okay?” “Barely. Can you speak louder?” Eventually I was able to give Funston a rundown of our experiences in northern Mexico. “Can you put it all in a written report?” Funston asked. “I’d like a record of it.
