And the villagers, using his body as walls. A horse reared, throwing it's rider, spear glanced off scales, Elena and the villagers held the line, shouting, pushing back anyone who got through. It was messy, it was fast, it was over in ten minutes. When it was done , five raiders were down, none dead, the rest were retreating, horses spooked, leader dragging himself back up the ridge cursing. Kaelen stood in the middle of it all, breathing hard, not a drop of blood on him. "Leave now," he said, "And don't come back." The raiders didn't answer they ran. Silence fell over the pass. Then, Mara stepped forward, looking at Kaelen like she was seeing him for the first time. "You didn't kill them," she said. "I don't kill, unless I have to," Kaelen replied. Mara nodded slowly, "The valley will hear about this." "They already know," Elena said glancing at the villagers. Most of them were staring at Kaelen with something that wasn't fear, Respect, maybe even gratitude. Kade came up beside her, grinning, "Told you we didn't need an army." Elena bumped his shoulder, "Don't get cocky, we got lucky." " Or," Kaelen said quietly "People are better than you expected when they're not terrified." That night the valley held a feast. Not a tribute,a celebration, long tables in the square, breads and roasted goats and the first apples of the season. Kaelen came down, human-shaped and sat at the head table with Elena, Mara, and Kade. people came up to thank him, hesitantly at first, then more naturally. A kid tugged at Elena's sleeve,"Miss Elena, does the dragon really have books?" Kaelen leaned forward,"I do, And if you can read then you have to borrow them, but you have to bring them back when you're done." The kid's eyes went wide,"Really?" "Really" later when the fire had burned low and most people had gone home, Elena found Kaelen on the ridge, looking out over the valley. "They're not afraid of you anymore," She said. "No," Kaelen said,"they're afraid, for me now, that's new." Elena smiled,"Get used to it, you're stucked with us." Kaelen turned to her, gold eyes soft,in the moon light."I know, and I don't want to leave." The bond flared, warm and certain. But peace, Elena was learning, had its own kind of weight. Two weeks after the raid,a messenger arrived from Veymere,a formal one, with a seal and a request. The council of Veymere wanted to meet with the dragon of "darkmere" ,to discuss about a new bargain, trade, protection and mutual defense. Mara brought the letter to Elena and kaelen that evening, "They're scared, Mara said." The broken teeth will come back, Veymere can't hold them alone. " "And they want me to take over where the old dragon left off" Kaelen said while reading out the letter. Elena frowned, "That's not what we fought for." "No," Kaelen agreed, But if I say no, Veymere burns, if I say yes, I'm back in the bargain business." Mara looked between them, "What do you want to do now?" Kaelen closed the letter, "I want to ask the person I am bonded to." Elena stared at him, the weight of it hit her-this wasn't just about them anymore, it was about what kind of peace they were building. "We don't make bargains," she finally replied, "We make agreement, equal ones, if Veymere wants help, they'll help us too, no tributes, no fear." Kaelen nodded, "Then we go to Veymere and talk." The trip to Veymere took three days. The town was smaller than Thornevale, poorer, built around a half-dried river bed. The council met them in the old town hall, wary and hopeful in equal measure. Kaelen didn't shift, he didn't intimidate, he sat at the table, listened and offered terms:shared patrols, shared grain stores for winter, a joint guard for the pass. In return Veymere would help repair Thornevale's roads, and send two of their smiths to train Kade and two others. "No tributes," Kaelen said, "no obedience, just neighbors helping neighbors " The council argued for hours. In the end they agreed. As they left the hall, the head council man pulled Elena aside, "you're lucky," he said quietly, "most dragons wants tributes, but he wants partnership." Elena smiled, "he's lucky too." Back in Thornevale, things kept changing. The irrigation worked better, the roads were repaired, two kids came to live with Kade, and learn smithing. Mara stepped down as elder, passing the role to a younger woman who had been one of the spear holders at the pass. And kaelen.... Kaelen started to relax. Elena noticed it in small things, he laughed more, he let Kade tease him about his terrible cooking , he slept deeper without tension that had been in his shoulders for centuries. One evening, sitting by the pool, Elena asked, "Do you regret it? staying?" Kaelen considered, "for four hundred years, I thought if I stayed I'd become the monster they needed me to be," he looked at her, "You proved me wrong." Elena reached for his hand, "You proved me wrong too, I thought I had to choose between my brother and myself, things turned out, I didn't have to choose at all." The bond hummed, warm and steady. Outside the valley was quiet, not the quiet of fear, but the quiet of people sleeping safe in their beds. Kaelen pulled her closer, forehead resting against hers, "whatever comes out next," he said, "we face it together." " Together "Elena agreed. And for the first time in a long time, the future didn't feel like a threat. It felt like a promise. PART SIX COST OF TRUST. The agreement with Veymere held for two months. Two months of shared patrols, shared grain shipments, and Kade coming home with burns on his forearms and a grin that said he'd finally forged something that didn't fall apart in the quench.Thornevale was quieter, fuller, people were trading again on the road, between the valleys, and for the first time in years, the market had apples that weren't shriveled. Elena noticed Kaelen watching it all like he expected it to fall apart, " You're waiting for the other shoe to drop," she said one evening as they walked the ridge.the bond let her feel it-His low, constant tension, like a bowstring pulled too tight. "Other shoes usually do," Kaelen said."Especially when humans gets comfortable." "Not helpful." He glanced at her,and for a second the tension eased."No,it is not." The shoe dropped on a Tuesday withba rider covered in dust and a thorn Veymere banner. "Broken Teeth hit the northern pass," he gasped, sliding off his horse in Thornevale's square."They didn't go for the town, they hit the grain stores, burned half of it,took the rest." Mara was there in seconds, face pale,"Casualties?" "Three dead, two of ours, one of theirs, they left a message." He pulled out a charred piece of cloth, tied with a leather thong. On it,a crude drawing a dragon's head with an X through it. Elena's stomach dropped," They know about Kaelen." " They know Veymere has an ally,"Mara said," And they're making sure that ally cost us." Kaelen arrived before Elena could answer, moving fast from the ridge,he took one look at the cloth and his jaw locked. "This is on me"he said. " No,"Elena said immediately," This is on the Broken teeth." " They're targeting you because of me,"Kaelen said," if I'd stayed on the mountain ----" " If you'd stayed on mountain, Veymere would have been ashes right now,"Elena cut in." Don't you start taking blames for other people's choices." Mara stepped between them before it could go further,"Arguing doesn't put out fires, the question is:what do we do now?" They decided on a meeting, not with Veymere's council this time -with the broken teeth themselves. It was reckless,Mara said so, Kade said so,even Kaelen looked like it thought it was a bad idea.
