Chapter 2: The Gilded Cage The leather seats of the Maybach were cool against Chloe’s skin, but the interior of the car felt like a vacuum, sucking the oxygen right out of her lungs. Silas sat beside her, his presence a heavy, suffocating weight. He didn't look at her; he was focused on his tablet, his fingers tapping away at multi-million dollar deals as if he hadn't just shattered her entire world in a VIP lounge. "Where are you taking me?" Chloe whispered, her voice cracking. "The gala... the catering staff will wonder where I went. My sister is waiting for me to bring home the paycheck." "The catering company has already been paid for your 'early departure' due to a family emergency," Silas said, his voice calm and detached. "And your sister’s medical debt? It was cleared five minutes ago. Consider it a down payment on your cooperation." Chloe’s heart plummeted. He had moved so fast. In the span of a twenty-minute car ride, he had already mapped out her life and bought her silence. "You can't just buy people, Silas." Silas finally turned to look at her. The streetlights outside flickered across his face, casting deep shadows in the hollows of his cheeks. "I didn't buy you, Chloe. I reclaimed what was mine. You signed a contract five years ago. You took the first installment of the surrogate fee and then you stole the 'product.' In the eyes of the law, you’re a thief. In my eyes? You’re much worse." "He’s not a product!" Chloe screamed, her maternal instincts flaring. "He’s a little boy! He’s Leo! He likes dinosaurs and hates broccoli and he cries when he has a nightmare. He isn't a line item in your ledger!" Silas’s jaw tightened. For a split second, a crack appeared in his icy mask. "I am aware of what he is. Which is why he is currently being settled into the East Wing of my estate." Chloe froze. The blood drained from her face until she felt faint. "What did you say?" "My men picked him up from your apartment fifteen minutes ago," Silas said smoothly. "He’s safe. He’s currently with a world-class nanny and a security detail that costs more than your hometown’s annual budget." "You kidnapped him!" Chloe lunged for the door handle, but it was locked. She began to pound on the reinforced glass. "Let me out! You monster! You can't just take a child!" Silas grabbed her wrists, pinning them to the leather seat above her head. He leaned in so close she could smell the expensive bourbon on his breath. "I took my son from a babysitter who was distracted by a soap opera in a building with a broken front door lock. I moved him to a fortress. If you want to see him—if you want to sleep in the same building as him tonight—you will sit back, you will stop screaming, and you will listen to the new terms." Chloe sobbed, her strength vanishing. The mention of Leo being in his hands broke her. She went limp against the seat, tears streaming down her face. "What do you want?" Silas released her wrists but didn't move away. He pulled a thick folder from the seat pocket and dropped it into her lap. "The public knows me as the bachelor king of the Vane Empire. My board of directors is currently breathing down my neck about 'stability' and 'succession' before our merger with the European sector next month. An illegitimate child is a scandal. A long-lost wife and a secret heir, however... that is a miracle. It’s a love story the press will eat up." Chloe looked at the document. The header read: MARRIAGE & CO-PARENTHOOD AGREEMENT. "You want a fake marriage," she breathed. "I want a legally binding one," Silas corrected. "You will marry me tomorrow morning in a private ceremony. You will live in the Vane Estate. You will attend every gala, every charity auction, and every board dinner by my side. You will play the part of the doting wife who went into hiding to protect her child from the spotlight." "And if I refuse?" Silas leaned back, his eyes turning into chips of ice. "Then I file for full custody. I have a team of forty lawyers, Chloe. I will prove you are an unstable, fleeing parent who denied a child his rightful heritage. I will make sure you never see Leo again until his eighteenth birthday. And by then, he won't even remember your name." "You wouldn't," she whispered. "Try me." The car turned into a massive stone driveway, passing through three separate security gates before coming to a halt in front of a sprawling, gothic-modern mansion. The Vane Estate. It looked like a palace, but to Chloe, it looked like a tomb. The door was opened by a silent chauffeur. Silas stepped out and reached back, offering a hand to Chloe. It wasn't an invitation; it was a command. Chloe took his hand, her fingers trembling. As they walked into the grand foyer, the sheer scale of the wealth was nauseating. Gold-leafed ceilings, priceless oil paintings, and a staff of servants lined up like soldiers. "Where is he?" Chloe demanded. "Take me to Leo." "Upstairs. Third door on the left," Silas said. "But Chloe?" She stopped at the foot of the stairs, looking back at him. "The marriage license is on the desk in the library. If it isn't signed by dawn, the custody papers are filed at 8:00 AM. Don't think your 'motherhood' gives you leverage here. In this house, I am the only authority." Chloe didn't wait. She ran up the stairs, her heart in her throat. she threw open the third door on the left and gasped. It was a bedroom larger than her entire apartment, filled with every toy a child could dream of. And there, in the center of a massive canopy bed, was Leo. He was fast asleep, clutching his tattered stuffed rabbit. He looked so small, so innocent, and so out of place in this cold, sterile museum of wealth. Chloe collapsed onto the edge of the bed, stroking his hair, her tears wetting his pillow. "I'm so sorry, baby," she whispered. "Mommy’s here. I won't let him take you." She sat there for hours, watching him breathe. As the clock in the hallway chimed 3:00 AM, Chloe stood up. She knew what she had to do. She couldn't win against Silas Vane, not with money or lawyers. She had to sign. She had to sell her soul to keep her son. She walked out of the bedroom and down the silent, shadowed hallway toward the library. The door was ajar. A single lamp was on, casting a glow over the mahogany desk. Chloe walked to the desk, her eyes blurred with tears. She picked up the fountain pen. It felt heavy, like a weapon. She turned to the signature page, her hand shaking so hard she could barely hold the pen. But as she looked down at the document, her breath hitched. Underneath the marriage contract was a second, smaller piece of paper. It wasn't a legal document. It was a handwritten note in a jagged, elegant script she recognized instantly. Chloe, I found more than just the birth certificate. I found the medical records from the night you fled. I know why you really left, and I know who helped you. Sign the contract, and I’ll keep your sister alive. Refuse, and the 'accident' that took your parents will happen again. Tonight. Chloe dropped the pen. Her parents' death had been ruled a hit-and-run five years ago. An accident. Her heart stopped. Silas hadn't just found her. He had been watching her for years. And he wasn't just her "husband"—he was the man holding the leash of the person who killed her family. Suddenly, the library door creaked open behind her. "You're late, Chloe," Silas’s voice came from the darkness. "The sun is almost up. Have you decided? Are you my wife... or are you my enemy?" Chloe turned, her eyes wide with a new, terrifying realization. Silas wasn't just a billionaire. He was a monster with secrets that went far deeper than a hidden heir. And as he stepped into the light, he wasn't holding a contract. He was holding her sister’s locket—the one Chloe knew her sister never, ever took off. "Where is she, Silas?" Chloe screamed. "What did you do to my sister?!" Silas smiled, and for the first time, it was truly terrifying. "That depends on how well you kiss me when the priest asks for the vows." What happened to Chloe's sister? And what is the dark secret behind her parents' death? Don't miss Chapter 3: The Blood-Stained Vows!
