Bound by Contracts

715 Words
Ella, you’re back. Where have you been? My mum asked me I went to see Mary. We had a lot to talk about. Is that so? I hope you understand how serious this situation is. We’ve been waiting for you to come back. I know, Mom. I just needed to get away for a bit. Ella, this is not a time to run away. You need to face reality. The contract with the Thompsons is final. We have to proceed with the marriage. I can’t believe this! I’ve already told you, I’m not ready for this. And there’s something you don’t know—I have a boyfriend. A boyfriend? You didn’t mention that before. How long have you been seeing him? We’ve been together for over a year. He means a lot to me. I don’t want to lose him, but this contract… it’s tearing everything apart. Ella, I understand this is difficult. But you need to think about our future. Mr. Thompson’s son is very wealthy. This marriage will secure our financial stability. Your boyfriend… well, he doesn’t compare. You can’t be serious, Mom! My feelings don’t matter at all? You’re asking me to abandon someone I love for money? It’s not about abandoning anyone. It’s about making a choice for our family’s well-being. Your boyfriend can’t offer what Mr. Thompson’s son can. This is an opportunity we can’t afford to pass up. I can’t just forget about him! I love him. How can you ask me to choose money over my own happiness? It’s not about happiness right now, Ella. It’s about security and stability. You need to think about what’s best for the family. But what about what’s best for me? I feel like I’m being used as a pawn in this deal. You’re asking me to sacrifice my future for this contract. I know it’s hard. But sometimes we have to make tough choices for the greater good. This contract is our way out of financial struggle. It’s our chance for a better life. Mom, please. Can’t we find another way? I don’t want to lose the person I love. There has to be another solution. This is the solution we have. We can’t turn back now. The Thompsons are expecting this arrangement to go through, and we have already given our word. I can’t do this. I can’t just walk away from him and marry someone I don’t even know. This isn’t fair! Ells, please. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be. Think of all we’ve been through. This is our chance to secure a future for ourselves. What about my feelings? What about the love and commitment I have with my boyfriend? You can’t just disregard that! I understand you’re upset, but you need to focus on what’s practical. This is not just about you; it’s about our entire family’s future. But it feels like you’re taking away my future too. I don’t want to be trapped in a marriage just because of a contract. I want to make my own choices. I’m doing this for us, Ella. I’m doing this because I believe it’s the right decision. I wish there was another way, but this is our only option right now. I don’t know how to go on like this. I feel so alone and helpless. I wish you could understand how much this is hurting me. Ella's mother sighs deeply, her expression a mix of frustration and concern. I understand this is painful. I truly do. But we must follow through with this arrangement. It’s too late to back out now. I can’t believe this is happening. I feel like my whole world is falling apart. I know it’s hard, but you have to be strong. We’ll get through this. You’ll adjust to the new situation, and things will eventually settle down. I hope you’re right. I just don’t know how to cope with all this right now. Ella stands up, wiping her tears. Her mother looks at her with a mixture of sympathy and resolve. We’ll talk more about this soon. For now, try to get some rest. We have a lot to prepare for. Ella nods silently and walks to her room, leaving her mother behind, who watches her with a heavy heart.
