Sparks in the Chemistry Lab

News in St. Xavier High School traveled faster than a rumors in the hallway, and by fourth period, the entire school was whispering. The quiet, artsy guy from the back row and the popular basketball captain’s best friend? It was the kind of mismatch that no one saw coming, which made it all the more unbelievable. And nowhere was the tension thicker than in the Room 204—the Chemistry Lab. "Alright class, pair up for the titration experiment," Mr. Kapoor’s voice boomed over the clanking of glass beakers and burrettes. "Same lab partners as assigned last month." Nitin internally groaned. His assigned lab partner was Ritika. Across the room, Priyansh was paired with Disha, a arrangement they’ve had since the start of the semester. Normally, Disha would be beaming, making sure Priyansh’s lab coat was straight and doing ninety percent of the calculations for him. Today was different. As Nitin walked over to his station, Ritika was already measuring out solution, her movements unusually rigid. When Nitin pulled out his stool and sat down, she didn't offer her usual warm smile. "Hey," Nitin said quietly, setting his notebook down. "Hey," Ritika replied, her voice soft, eyes fixed on the meniscus of the liquid in the graduated cylinder. "So... you and Disha?" Nitin paused, keeping his voice strictly neutral. "Yeah. We’ve been... talking for a while." Ritika turned to face him, setting the glass cylinder down a little too hard on the black countertop. "It's just surprising, Nitin. I mean, you never mentioned her. And Disha... well, she’s always been so focused on Priyansh. It just feels so sudden." There was an edge to her tone that Nitin had never heard before. It wasn't anger; it was confusion wrapped in a strange kind of possessiveness. Nitin felt a spike of hope, but he held his composure. "People change, Ritika," Nitin said gently, looking right into her eyes. "Sometimes you realize that what you’re looking for has been right there all along, just waiting for a chance." Ritika parted her lips to speak, her eyes searching his face for any sign of hesitation, but Nitin didn't break eye contact. For the first time, she was the one looking flustered in front of him. Meanwhile, two lab tables away, Priyansh was barely looking at his beaker. His eyes kept darting back to Nitin and Ritika’s table. "Disha, pass me the HCl," Priyansh demanded, his tone rough. Disha handed him the solution without even looking up from her lab notebook. "It's acetic acid we need, Priyansh. Read the board." Priyansh slammed the flask down on the stand. "What is wrong with you today? You’re acting completely distant. And what’s with this ridiculous joke with Nitin?" Disha finally looked up, raising an eyebrow with calm authority. "It's not a joke, Priyansh. Nitin is sweet, attentive, and actually listens when I talk. I don't have to constantly chase his attention." Priyansh’s jaw clenched tightly. "He's a nobody, Dish! You're doing this just to mess with me, aren't you?" "The world doesn't revolve around you, Priyansh," Disha said softly, but her words landed like a heavy blow. "I'm moving on. You should focus on Ritika. Isn't that what you wanted?" Priyansh opened his mouth to argue, but no words came out. His massive ego was taking a beating, and the sight of Disha looking so unaffected by him was throwing him completely off balance. When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of the class, the tension in the room was palpable. Nitin packed his bag and met Disha at the exit. As they walked out into the corridor together, Disha leaned in close, her shoulders relaxing as they got further away from the crowd. "Ritika was definitely affected," Nitin whispered, a small smile breaking out on his face. "She was questioning everything." "Priyansh lost his mind," Disha grinned, though her smile faded slightly as she looked down. "He actually got jealous. I thought I’d feel happy about it... but it just made my chest ache." Nitin looked at her, seeing the lingering pain behind her brave face. Without thinking, he gently nudged her shoulder with his. "Hey. We're in this together, remember? We stick to the plan." Disha looked up at Nitin, catching the sincere warmth in his eyes. A genuine, soft smile replaced her forced one. "Yeah. Together." As they walked side by side toward the cafeteria, neither of them noticed that Priyansh was watching them from the classroom door, his fists clenched tight, already planning his next move to dismantle their little arrangement.
