The St. Xavier Annual Cultural Night was in full swing. Fairy lights decorated the open courtyard, acoustic music vibrated through the air, and laughter filled the evening breeze. But behind the sparkling lights, the tension was suffocating.
Nitin stood near the decorated photo booth in a sharp black shirt. Disha was beside him in a stunning blue dress. To anyone passing by, they looked like the perfect couple.
"Look to your left, ten o'clock," Disha whispered, taking a sip from her mocktail. "Priyansh has been staring at us for the last twenty minutes. He hasn't even touched his drink."
Nitin glanced over. Priyansh was leaning against a pillar, his jaw tightly set, completely ignoring his basketball teammates. But Nitin’s eyes quickly shifted to the corner of the courtyard—where Ritika stood alone, holding two paper cups, constantly looking in Nitin’s direction with hurt and longing written all over her face.
"He's coming over," Disha warned softly, straightening up.
Priyansh marched straight toward them, completely ditching his usual relaxed charm. He grabbed Disha gently by the wrist, his eyes locked on hers. "Disha. We need to talk. Right now. In private."
Disha looked at his hand, then up at his flushed face. "Priyansh, I'm with Nitin—"
"I don't give a damn!" Priyansh snapped, his voice loud enough to draw a few glances from nearby students. "Five minutes, Disha. Please."
Disha looked at Nitin. Nitin gave her a subtle, reassuring nod. She let out a breath and followed Priyansh toward the quiet hallway near the art room.
Nitin watched them walk away, feeling a sudden wave of emptiness. But before he could even process it, a quiet, trembling voice spoke behind him.
"Nitin..."
Nitin turned around. Ritika was standing right there, her fingers tightly clutching her dress, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
"Ritika? Hey, are you—"
"Why are you doing this, Nitin?" Ritika interrupted, her voice cracking slightly. She took a step closer, stepping out of the shadows and into the dim glow of the fairy lights. "Why are you avoiding me? Why are you acting like I don't even exist anymore?"
Nitin froze, his heart slamming against his ribs. "Ritika, I'm not avoiding you. I’m just... with Disha now."
"No! That's not it!" Ritika said desperately, stepping even closer, her eyes searching his face. "You used to look at me differently, Nitin. Every morning by the lockers, in the library, in class... I felt it! And then suddenly, out of nowhere, you’re holding hands with Disha? You're giving her your hoodie? You're looking at her like..." She bit her lip, a tear spilling down her cheek. "It's driving me crazy, Nitin. I can't take it anymore."
Nitin’s breath hitched. "Ritika..."
"I don't care about Priyansh! I don't care about anyone else!" Ritika confessed, her voice a desperate, soft whisper as she reached out and grabbed Nitin's hand, holding it tight against her chest. "I miss *you*. I miss the way you looked at me. Please tell me I didn't ruin my chance before I even knew I had one."
Meanwhile, around the corner, Priyansh was practically pleading with Disha.
"I was a fool, okay?!" Priyansh said, his hands in his hair. "Seeing you with him... it made me realize how much I need you, Dish. I don't want Ritika. I want *you*. Please tell me this whole thing with Nitin is a mistake."
Disha stared at Priyansh, the boy she had chased for years, now standing desperate and broken before her. She smiled softly—a sad, peaceful smile—realizing that the game was finally over.
Back in the courtyard, Nitin looked down at Ritika's hand trembling over his heart, then into her tear-filled, hopeful eyes. All the hidden emotions, all the unspoken words in his sketchbooks, came rushing to the surface.
"Meet me on the school auditorium roof in ten minutes," Nitin whispered, his voice steady and full of conviction. "Just you and me."
Ritika nodded eagerly, wiping her teary eyes as a tiny, breathless smile broke through her face.
The stage was set. The game was over. It was time for the truth.
