Soaking in the bath at the end of the day, she had to admit to herself that Peter had behaved like a perfect gentleman throughout the couple of hours she had spent down at the police station. She had been too tired to turn down his offer of a pub meal and a lift home, but to be on the safe side she had made him drop her a short distance away from the cottage. She was still a little uncertain about his strange manner and clipped speech, but figured that a lifetime in the Army had possibly made him the way he was.
